coffeejoe 0 #1 December 20, 2004 Has anyone ever had their Wings riser cover come open during headdown? I *THINK* I saw mine flapping last time I was doing some solo headdown, but it was near deployment time and I was wearing an Oxygn (full face), so my visibility wasn´t the best. My rig is quite new, has about 60 jumps on it or so and the covers seem quite solid. I don´t have any complains about the rig at all. Has that ever happened to you? AggieDave 6 #2 December 21, 2004 I've got about 600-700 jumps on my Wings, never once have I had a problem with the riser covers opening. Have you called/e-mailed Sunrise Rigging about this?--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
coffeejoe 0 #3 December 21, 2004 Thanks for the reply, AggieDave. I haven´t talked to Sunrise Rigging because I´m not sure the riser covers were actually open. That´s why I posted here, to see if it has ever happened to anyone else. Btw, people at Sunrise Rigging have been very helpful every time I needed them. Thanks! They are very secure. However, there isn't a riser cover out there on any rig that won't come out if it's knocked hard enough on exit or in freefall. If there is a problem with one riser cover, Wings will fix it for you ASAP.
bmcd308 0 #6 December 21, 2004 Mine used to come undone a good bit, so my rigger started making an effort to get less bulk up in the ears of the pack job. This does not look as good (to my eye), but it eliminated the problem. I have a W-21. matthewcline 0 #7 December 21, 2004 We have 16 wings on our team and not a riser cover 1 has come open. We have bee nusing them since 2001 with out issue, if any thing the covers where hard to open during deployment when new. MattAn Instructors first concern is student safety. coffeejoe 0 #8 December 23, 2004 I see :) Thanks a lot for all the replies. I´ll keep an eye open for it. About the riser covers being too hard to open, when I first got my rig and checked it out I thought my covers would never open if I had to deploy my reserve with the main still in place! Henri explained to me that the opening forces were quite expressive :) Naive... Well, thanks a lot.
goose491 0 #9 December 24, 2004 Hello Edu. I jump a wings and had my right riser cover flappin' in the wind once. They're built pretty snug but I really don't think there's a rig out there that won't flap a flap once in a while. I wouldn't worry about it unless it becomes a regular occurence. Then my suggestions are twofold. 1) Talk to your rigger about getting those "ears" filled a bit more during your reserve repack... could thicken out that erea, giving the riser cover more to wrap around, giving the riser cover tuck tabs a little more bite. 2) Is the rig fitted to you? If the verticals are too long, the rig could 'sag' on your back... like there's a little slack at the shoulders. In head down, the rig would be allowed to slide down (up your torso ;-) and then there's slack at the tuck tabs again. Hope you get it sorted. It's prolly nothing. Nick My Karma ran over my Dogma!!! masterrig 1 #10 December 24, 2004 I tried that for awhile (less material at the top) and the results looked, well, bleeechh! I talked with Henri (the manufacturer) and he told me to be sure to really 'fill' the corners of the free-bag. I found that, you really have to make sure the tuck-tabs are 'well placed' in their respective pockets. Chuck
coffeejoe 0 #11 December 24, 2004 Thanks for the tips. The harness was made for my measures. I´ll see what my rigger can do on the next repack. Happy x-mas to you all!! Cheers, Edu
cvfd1399 0 #12 April 27, 2005 I also have hard riser inserts, and when I do HD jumps both riser covers always pop open I have even had a toggle come out of the brake setting and trail in the wind. I was told to lay the rig on the MLW to store it and that will form the risers and tuck tabs to stay closed. I did that for 3 weeks and it still comes open. I am going to build a PVC pipe rack to make it more the shape of my shoulders probbaly 8'' pipe. If this does not work I am sending it back to wings for a check up. Did you ever get yours fixed, and what did you do to fix it?
