Last candygram for Mongo

Recommended Posts

When I was a lad in the Detroit-area Boy Scouts, I had the opportunity to work with both he and Gil Mains (another Lion -- his son was in our troop). Both very large, and loud, but gentle men.

Most people don't know that Karras actually finished 2nd in the Heisman voting his senior year at Iowa......unheard of for a defensive lineman back in the day.

"Mongo just pawn in game of life"

Rest easy Karras, and thanks for the laughs... Your role in Blazing Saddles is a classic for all time.

I have a bit of a tradition. When an actor from one of my favorites passes, I watch the work. I'll be watching my copy of 'Blazing Saddles' again tonight. When Paul Newman passed, I had just gotten to Iraq and ordered (what else?) 'Cool Hand Luke'. With Peter Boyle, it was his portrayal of the monster in 'Young Frankenstein'.

Rest easy Mongo. I don't know how you lived your life, but one little part of it made lots of other people's lives a bit better. That's something you can hang your hat on.
I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet..

But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

As much as I love "Blazing Saddles", I always see him in "The Paper Lion." If you want to know what a football player used to be, just watch that one. No sack dances, no histryonics or bullshit. Just MEN playing football.

Karras, looking down at a QB he had just flattened, "Ooh, that hurt ya."

Karras was so memorable for so many things. As a great football player? Or the guy who was suspended from football for gambling and then refused to call coin tosses because “I’m not allowed to gamble.”

One little known thing about Karras is that he was extremely nearsighted but the “Myopic Monster” refused to wear glasses during a game because he thought he played better when he worked on hearing the game and just linking it with the visual blurs. He also said that seeing those big guys scared the hell out of him.

So one game they were playing the Bears and the weather was bitter cold. The Bears offensive lineman was holding him frequently, the game was getting out of reach and Karras was angry and cold. He decided that he was going to beat the hell out of the offensive lineman to send a message and so he could get ejected and stay warm in the locker room. Karras went nuts, punching and kicking the other guy.

Did I mention Karras was nearly blind? Bears coach Halas made a substitution on the play and put in a different right guard, who happened to be Alex Karras’ brother, Ted Karras. Alex didn't know this and beat the shit out of his own brother.

Long ago when I read "Paper Lion", I recall Plimpton saying something like: "Before each game, Karras would get nauseous, throw up, then go out on the field and make the other team pay for it."
