Spot the station - NASA

Recommended Posts

I check to see for it every chance I can. And frequently alert friends when it's going over.

A few weeks ago, there was a real treat when the ISS passed overhead and the Dragon was about 300 miles behind it. Looked like the little Dragon was chasing it. I bring my kids out to see it. And sometimes my lovely wife will come out and join me for a look and a brief lie down on the grass as she supports my nerdiness.

The e-mail notification, I think, would be a bit irritating. It limits the notifications to high sighting opportunities - above 40 degrees. Having viewed the ISS dozens of times just this year, you can get good looks at it at 20 degrees. Sometimes I dig seeing it for a couple of minutes on the low horizon. "Wow. It's over Washington right now! Watch it just disappear over the terminator."

Example: on tuesday a little after 6:00 a.m. there will be a sighting opportunity in Fresno that will last for six minutes (that's about the longest the sightings get) but will max out at 36 degrees.

The next day will be at 6:15 a.m. and visible for only 4 minutes but with a peak elevation of about 70 degrees. You'll be notified of the second but not the first. Which means you really miss out on a lot of them.[:/]

My wife is hotter than your wife.
