"God Bless America" film by Bobcat Goldthwait

Recommended Posts

Watched this the other night and thought it was quite awesome. Violent in some areas, but thoughtfully done and extremely well executed for a small budget independent film.

You might want to check it out.

Available on Netflix DVD. Probably elsewhere too.

What?
Quade liked something?
And it is a film by Bobcat Goldthwait???:o

There's only one possible explanation: It demonized religious people, gun owners and right-wingers.

You might want to rethink that position after seeing the film.

Is that the one where some older dude and his daughter set out to "eliminate" stupid thoughtless people from the gene pool? I saw a short trailer and thought, damn I gotta see this flick! :D

Yep. Although, not his daughter, but you're essentially getting it right. She does fill in as his surrogate daughter.

Yes, I just watched the trailer, and DAMN it's violent.
I presume it is a black comedy.

Yeah, seemed like the guy acted like a cold blooded killer or something. Bobcat really cracked me up in his Police Academy roles. :D

Current preferred term is "dark comedy."

Some people say Tyler Perry makes, "black comedies." When they do, I just sigh and roll my eyes.

So what did you like about the film and what separates it's from all others for you to bring it up in the bonfire?

A fair question.

Regardless of the violence shown in the trailers, the film is really about civility and kindness, or rather the lack thereof by modern society in the US. Not just small and interpersonal civility, but also the sort of sacrificial lamb quality of somebody like William Hung on programs like American Idol, where the show knows he's a horrible singer but puts him on air so the audience can mock him.

Now, that's not the only example of bad things in the US that are uncivil, but it's one I can use in this discussion and not spoil very much for people who have seen the trailer already.

It's about brats and horrible parents, exploiters and the exploited, people who lie to the public in order to make a buck . . . general assholism really.

And yet Bobcat does it in a really thoughtful way. You inherently know what the protagonist is doing is, on a certain level horribly wrong going on his quest to fix this, but you also root for him because Bobcat has made the guy a really sympathetic character who is on a mission to do something good . . . just in the worst possible way.

Watch it. You'll see what I mean . . . Hopefully.

Oh, one more thing . . .

When I go out of my way to start a thread and recommend a film, it's usually because it's a film few people are talking about, usually independent, usually small, usually films I think people on this forum would be interested in seeing. I think the last one I did like this was "Red State" by Kevin Smith although I'll chime in on almost any film thread if I notice it.

If I started a thread about "Spider-Man", it really doesn't bring anything new to the table. You can hear about that from literally hundreds of people and you've probably been bombarded by ads on TV and virtually every other medium. So what's the point of me bringing it up?

Thank you!
I was just trying to remember the name of that film a couple days ago and was drawing a complete blank.:D

Although initially upon watching the film I was somewhat drawn into the point the movie is trying to make.

Without giving much away for those who haven't seen the movie afterwards I decided that ugliness has always existed in the world.

I was having a discussion with a Sociologist who was of the firm belief that individuals are "programed" to be who they are by the age of 10. I disagreed strongly and pointed to several sociological events which have first been depicted in media and then played out in real life. ie: the Columbine massacre in relation to the 1st Matrix movie. Neo and the black overcoat scene.

After giving "God Bless America" some thought I then distanced myself from agreeing with any of what the movie was trying to point out.

I do believe America is on a downward slide and most Americans don't see it. Visit the Speakers corner and you'll see two sides engaged in heated political debate and overall nothing is getting accomplished. I don't follow the BS myself.

I engage in business, as best I can taking advantage of opportunities as they present themselves.

The problem is humans are born with a blank slate for memories and recall of preexisting society is at best is 25 to 50 years.

China has only enjoyed the last 30 of economic success. The difficulties and hardships suffered up until the mid 80's has made for a much stronger population which is also homogenous.

Americans are as a majority are pampered and comfortable.

Media appealing to the prurient interest has always been the easy road. Even the movie discussed uses this effectively.

For all America claims to be the land of the free it simply is not anymore and that is a shame.

I will be seeing this movie when it's released. Nonetheless, it will be only a matter of months before someone shoots someone else over something they did that was "impolite", and the media will be calling it the Bobcat Murder, or something equally attention-getting.

I also think the producers know that and will be counting on it as gorilla marketing for their small-budget film.

I have that same reservation. Most people can see the show as dark humor and social commentary and walk away a little more thoughtful, perhaps. But there are always a few that will take it as an inspiration. We've always had psychopaths and sociopaths, but must we make such efforts with our media to spur them on?

The movie was released in 2011. I didn't think a lot of people would see it in its theatrical release because it's so small and got very little distribution. It's also been out on DVD for a few weeks. I only mention it at this point because it's available through Netflix, which makes it available to a lot more people if they're interested.

As for this film getting blamed for any shooting sprees...

I don't want to spoil the end of the film, but this film ends as one would expect any crime spree film to end, as do most films about crime, as they pretty much have to end for them to be acceptable to most audiences.

In the end, the criminal (in a story) is pretty much always brought to justice to ensure in the minds of the audience "the system" works. It is only rarely that any criminal gets away with it.
