JohnMitchell 16 #2 December 8, 2012 People from other parts of the country don't realize how damn dangerous wind storms can be in the PNW. I had former coworker whose car was flattened by a douglas fir moments after he parked it by his mailbox. Luckily he was out of it, getting the mail or he'd be 2 feet tall. And that tree surgeon stuff doesn't come cheaply. I spent $550 this year to have an elm tree worked on at my rental house. And that was with me doing the cleanup and hauling off the wood. That's super cool that the guy is going to do the job for free. That's the way to get into the holiday spirit. BTW, Amazon, you still need some alder? I've got about 2/3's a cord of alder and cottonwood mixed. Come pick out some stuff you want.
airtwardo 7 #3 December 8, 2012 Not just the PNW... Here in The Lone Star things like that are fairly common too. Especially with the drought last year, there are literally tons & tons of weakened or dead trees waiting for the wind to blow. Several years ago during a thunderstorm here I watched in amazement as a 150' water oak broke off 5 feet from ground level and laid itself on top of our house. Not leaning, the whole thing levered up on the roof and stayed there. $35,000 to fix the 'dent'! ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~

'Course, everythang's bigger in Texas. . .Our little first house up here in WA got hit by a tree about 2 weeks after we sold it and moved out. Damn, good timing there. Hurricane Ike took out the diving board for the swimming pool...flattened it like an anvil dropped on the roadrunner! - a 100+ foot tree kicked over, roots ended above ground. ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~
