Car Insurance In-Car Monitor

Recommended Posts

i noticed that you received one reply which actually gave you info. here's mine: i had one for a month and didn't get any discount. i drive safely so i was a little pissed, then my girlfriend got a 7% discount. i was really pissed since she drives like a racecar driver and makes me nervous. then she told me that mine wasn't communicating, they sent a new one. i would recommend it, the worst thing that happens is you get no discount, my company goes up to 30%. even paying $40 a month is a $12 discount, well worth it to me.

Maybe in california but in the states I'm familiar with you have to have collision insurance. Comprehensive (tree falling on call is optional) In addition in Michigan we have no fault insurance and have to pay something like $150 a year into the fund for medical costs for uninsured.

Collision? You sure?
Flalala and Gawja require liability, I believe.

It's also a very short slippery slope before the government somehow gets a hold of those recordings to bring charges against someone.

There is no "slippery slope" here. It's coming to all newly manufactured cars in the US. Hell, it's already IN a lot of them.

In the earliest days of automotive "black boxes", they were equipped with voice data recorders as well. In a vast majority of accidents, the words most uttered were, "Oh, shit!" ... Except of course, in the case of skydivers where the last words were, "Hold my beer and watch this!"

Hi pops,

require liability,

Oregon used to 'require' that anyone driving have minimum insurance, that meant liability. But they had now way to control it.

Now, you cannot register your car ( renew your plates is what this means ) unless you list the insurance company & policy number. However, one can always get the insurance, register the vehicle & cancel the next day. I do see a fair number of cars driving around without current registration tabs. :S

Here you need liability & uninsured motorist insurance.

And I think Terry meant liability.

In Texas you have to get an annual safety check on everything...first thing they ask for is proof of insurance.

Here in Alabama they passed a law not long ago that you were required to have liability insurance. Well, people would buy it just to get the card, then drop the policy. Then when they get pulled over for speeding and the cop asks for license, registration AND proof of insurance, they've got the card. :| If they didn't, the cop writes a ticket for no insurance.

The state has or is working on making it harder to drive without insurance, but I'm not sure what the status is. I'm insured.

Here in the UK you have to have a minimum of third party insurance, but even if you insure and then cancel the police still get you because most of the traffic cars are fitted with ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) and appear to be linked into the DVLA (driver and vehicle licensing authority) computers.

Basically if you drive past one of these cars with lapsed/cancelled/no insurance, no MOT etc an alarm goes off in the police vehicle and tells them that there's no insurance etc on the vehicle.

If you can't prove that you have insurance there and then, the car is impounded (at your cost) until you can prove you have insurance or if you know you're driving without insurance you can sign the vehicle over to them and it's destroyed.

Damn... that's quite a police state you have over there. :P

There would be an uproar here if that system was implemented. [:/] But all I know is, under such a system, I wouldn't have to worry about some stupid uninsured motherfucker plowing into me and having to get MY insurance to fix the damage/cover my medical bills.

My opinion: if you have the money to BUY a car, BUY gas for it, then you better have the money to PAY for insurance, otherwise go ride a goddamn bus, train or bicycle. :|

Happening over here, too. My nephew's just had one installed, so I'll feed back his experience if he has anything to say about it. He's only just started driving - I'd assumed it was a young driver thing.

It's not for me though - I feel enough like a lab rat these days as it is!

Seems like it might be a big advantage for a responsible young driver (particularly male). They tend to get lumped in on the actuarial tables with the more reckless ones in their age group; if you could demonstrate a more mellow driving style, it could help quite a bit. I know when I was a teen, I got discounts for having a high GPA; I think the whole "honor student" thing was supposed to be a proxy for "responsible driver."

Well, New York state won't take away and destroy your car, but they are in contact with the insurance companies, and if you drop your policy, the registration gets cancelled.

You could still drive around with the plates, but if you get checked or pulled over (look up "bingo hunting" to see how easy it is for the cops to check) then you are really in trouble.

yeah I meant liability. I knew it was wrong when I wrote it but couldn't come up with the right word.

Think of it as collision on the other guy.:$

We have to have it to renew. And we have to pay the no fault pool fee. Since I moved here in 1980.

Whenevery you get stopped here, they ask for license, registration and insurance card.

Pretty standard these days, I think. I keep the ins. card taped to the registration so I can get it to the fine police officer in a hurry. Don't want to keep them waiting, you know.

Just 2-3 weeks ago I got pulled over for being on my cell phone while driving. I think it's around a $300 ticket. I had all my papers out the window when he walked up. He ran my stuff real quickly and let me off with a warning. Nice guy. B|

In Georgia the system is computerized now. They don't ask for your card if you are pulled over.

And Billy, they are working toward the number recognition system here. There are several Bibb County Sheriff cars that have it and quite a few State Troopers.

They will cruiser parking lots looking for cars with expired tags or insurance and then wait for the person to come out and pop them when they get on the road.

Bastards! :D

I keep insurance always, auto pay every 6 months. But I accidentally let the reg. expire on one car and got popped for a $125 ticket on a $60 registration. I even had my arm in a sling when he wrote me the ticket. Didn't get any sympathy on that one. :D

In VA the insurance companies are required to notify the Division of Motor Vehicles when you cancel your insurance.

VA also has some of the highest average ticket fines in the country. DON'T speed in VA. :o

Alabama is advertising that they just implemented an electronic system. If you get pulled over, they will know whether you are insured or not when they run the tag / license.

My European insurance is something like One Million Euros per accident. Highest in US for a private citizen is usually one fourth of that.

I would be happy to try the monitor to lower my already low rates. I drive very smoothly to save gas and wear and tear as well as make a more comfortable ride. Plus, I live 2.5 miles from work and don't drive that much. However, if the government tried to force me, I would rebel.
I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet..

But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.
