FallingRGR 0 #1 January 23, 2013 Does anyone know of any good apps for android/iphone that can track your flight pattern and horizontal and vertical speeds? Also discuss any other good skydiving apps, or any apps in general.
CSpenceFLY 1 #2 January 23, 2013 I doubt you are going to get very good info from a phone. The GPS receivers in the phones just are not that great.

dthames 0 #4 January 24, 2013 Quotepm DTHAMES he's got some really good info. I have a Flysight and the free viewer for the PC is pretty good. Are you talking about an app for the phone to present GPS data or a way for the phone to record the GPS data? FallingRGR 0 #5 January 24, 2013 I'll have to check out Flysight, never heard of it. Either really, whether the phone records it and then you could upload it into google earth and see a 3D path of some sort. But with phones I could imagine they could do just as well. I've got an LG Incredible 3 and the GPS on it seems to always be within a few feet, not sure at high speeds how it'd do.
chedlin 0 #6 January 28, 2013 I can't imagine it would work well. The GPS receiver may not work that well in the plane, and it's going to take a long time to get a lock. And in practice the App should work in airplane mode, we are using those, right? Without the help of the cell towers I think the accuracy will decline even further. I wonder how precise the accelerometers are and if they could be used to sharpen the GPS data? I think some android phones even have barometric pressure sensors. nigel99 617 #8 January 29, 2013 there are a few issues. Firstly you will want a decent gps receiver, many of the phone gps systems 'appear' to be good but in reality are using clever tricks with the mobile network to help the gps acquire lock and give a position. Secondly the default update rate on most gps systems is 1 second, you will want a fast update rate. 10 times a second is pretty easy to get hold of and should be adequate.Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived. DSE 5 #9 January 29, 2013 I'm pleased with BASEline (android). Paralog tracks well as an app, too, but you'll need the GPS to work with.
