jhh166 0 #1 February 9, 2013 is the phenomena of humans believing themselves less likely than their peers to experience an undesirable event. (Matt Gerdes, TGBOB) I do not have many strengths but I do believe I give my self honest self-evaluations and find myself guilty of this once and awhile. I do try to avoid it at all costs. Any one else occasionally guilty? I believe this to be the reason for most of the finger pointing in the incidents forum. It seems like it is human nature to find an excuse why it happened to someone else and will not happen to you. I am sure we all agree this is a horrible attitude, but it almost feels like it's a natural process to justify a reason how it can not happen to you and I think this directly correlates with judging the person to which it happened to in a negative manner. I hope everyone has a great weekend. R/S, John
jonstark 8 #2 February 9, 2013 Seems to me that a lot of the finger pointing in incidents is just the opposite of your hypothesis. It is the knowledge that one is absolutely susceptible to failure and the disbelief that someone else could be so stupid as to believe they are not. jon

Divalent 155 #4 February 9, 2013 "People judge themselves by their intentions, and others by their actions." So someone else broke themselves on a jump (or did something dangerous)? Clearly they were reckless. I break myself on a jump (or do something dangeroud)? Clearly wasn't what I intended to do; I was merely the victim of an unfortunate sequence of events. oldwomanc6 60 #5 February 9, 2013 I know that bad things do happen. They have happened to me in the past and will happen again. But I can't live my life in (undue) anticipation. I choose on some level to behave as if life is essentially good. I think know I would be paralyzed if i went through life expecting to get bit every time I moved. I had a few bad years living like that, and trust me, it sucks. Call it a coping mechanism if you want to, but it works. Bad things happen, and most of the time you can't avoid it. If you live your life with that foremost in your mind and actions, you close yourself off from all the good that life has in between the shit. I've found that focusing on the good has shown me that there is way more good than bad.lisa WSCR 594 FB 1023 CBDB

wmw999 2,589 #7 February 9, 2013 What she said. I look for the good, which means I see the small good, and generally only the significant bads. Beats the alternative. jhh166 0 #8 February 9, 2013 I like what she said as well. I am talking about people who make statements that sound like the following: This is why I take my time to pack properly... (assumption that others did not). Just an example - there are 100's of others.

jhh166 0 #11 February 9, 2013 Another way I look at it is a reminder and a way to keep myself in check; If it can happen to others out there it can happen to me. An honest self evaluation with comparative optimism in mind may be the anwser...just a thought.
