Amazon 7 #1 February 26, 2013 http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2013/02/59-of-the-tuna-americans-eat-is-not-tuna/273410/ What's for dinner at your local sushi joint? Pretty much anything but what's on the menu.Oceana •59% of the fish labeled "tuna" sold at restaurants and grocery stores in the US is not tuna. •Sushi restaurants were far more likely to mislabel their fish than grocery stores or other restaurants. •In Chicago, Austin, New York, and Washington DC, every single sushi restaurant sampled sold mislabeled tuna. •84% of fish samples labeled "white tuna" were actually escolar, a fish that can cause prolonged, uncontrollable, oily anal leakage. •The only fish more likely to be misrepresented than tuna was snapper, which was mislabeled 87% of the time, and was in actuality any of six different species. If you've ever wondered why the sushi in the display case is so affordable, given the dire state of the world's tuna supply, well, now you know. I had a relative who worked on a cattle boat shortly after WWII to deliver horses to Trieste, Italy. The suspicion among the crew was that the horses would not be wearing saddles after they arrived. Chuck You can fillet some salmon or halibut or just about any other species especially down on the Gulf Coast ( think Snapper.. grouper flounder, snook etc) and you will see little spiral worms a wigglin away down around the tail in the meat. Wormers, anti-biotics, various other drugs given to horses for various reasons. Truckloads of horses travel the highway near where I live, headed for slaughter in Ojinaga. Their condition varies from performance to emaciated. Those slaughter houses are not controlled and the meat is not tested, inspected or graded. Just butchered and shipped to Europe! If you are referring to sushi as fresh, consider that it is typically frozen (-20 C for seven days or -35 C for 15 hours) to kill off the nasty parasites. So, it is not fresh. However when you can trust the source, it's like any other animal - it's raised for eating and quite safe. Those who can't stand the idea of eating horse... What makes eating other animals any better? Personally, I don't care what the meat is, as long as it's not endangered, raised/butchered under horrible conditions or toxic.
