INCOMING CME: A magnetic eruption on the sun during the early hours of March 15th hurled a coronal mass ejection (CME) directly toward Earth. NOAA forecasters estimate a 70% chance of polar geomagnetic storms when the CME arrives on March 17th. High-latitude and possibly even middle-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras this weekend. Visit spaceweather.com for more information and updates.

woot woot. That's where I am, at least for now. Will be watching!

You may get a bit more than green up there.. this is a pretty energetic CME

I remember some pinks and reds in the night sky while I was at Eielson AFB...

I saw a good show on the White Salmon river right where it dumps into the Columbia one year. Just upstream fron the hwy 14 bridge. Pretty cool.

Same link as before...

Latest forecast from NOAA expects incoming CME tomorrow and not tonight as expected earlier.

In their words:

The geomagnetic field is expected to be at unsettled to major storm
levels (NOAA Scale G2-Moderate) with possible severe storm conditions
(NOAA Scale G3-Strong) at high latitudes on day 1 (17 Mar) due to
activity associated with the 15 March CME. Geomagnetic activity is
expected to slowly decrease to quiet to active levels by day 2 (18 Mar)
and quiet levels by day 3 (19 Mar) as CME effects diminish.

Right now it would mean a drive over the pass at the very least.. its freaking POURING outside....

The [url "http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/pmap/gif/pmapN.gif" ]aural oval should be expanding south by tomorrow night...

Dang it! It's not going to get to me. :(

I knew it wasn't, but hope springs eternal.

I saw the lights as a kid a few times, and they were one of the most amazing memories. :)

We got to see them while at Lost Prairie back in 2006 or 2007 about 2AM... they were a weird pulsating like I had never seen before... I was used to the waving curtains of shimmering light in the far north.. this was really different that night.

have you ever seen what looks like a star burst? Those are really amazing. About two years ago we had one right over my parents house, or what looked to be right over it.
It's been cloudy the last few nights so we haven't been able to see anything. UGH
No matter how slowly you say oranges it never sounds like gullible.
Believe me I tried.

Never seen that kind... BUT last night about 3 AM we did see some great green sky over in E Washington... We drove up to a nice clear area and VOILA.. almost ran off the damn road driving and gawking out the left window.

I LOVE this shit:)

GEOMAGNETIC STORM: Skies over North America turned green for St. Patrick's Day. A CME impact during the early hours of March 17th sparked auroras in the United States at least as far south as Colorado. More auroras are possible tonight, mainly over the Arctic, as Earth's magnetic field continues to reverberate from the impact. Check http://spaceweather.com for photos and updates

I'm in Northern Colorado, if we get clear skies, (I'm in the middle of nowhere), maybe I can see this for the (cough, cough) first time! B|B|B|
