I've heard stories that the harder ceramic insulation of a spark plug could be used to break auto glass because it scratches into the tempered glass on contact. It appears there are videos on Youtube of this. Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhlmKHbPFhU Yes, during manufacturing the surface of tempered glass is rapidly cooled by air jets, so it hardens first. When the interior cools (and contracts) later it puts the surface in compression, and Newton's 3rd tells us this puts the interior in tension. This makes the surface very resistant to nicks and scratches, but once a crack or scratch makes it through the surface layer the interior lets go explosively. If you look at tempered glass through polarizing sunglasses you can see the stress patterns in the surface.... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one. skiskyrock 0 #10 March 25, 2013 I was taking a glass blowing class a few years ago, and the instructor and I started talking about these. He made about thumb sized, and had me hold it tightly while he snipped the tail. The force was incredible. It was like a firecracker going off in my clenched fist.
