floridadiver81 0 #1 March 24, 2013 rant/ So before I go into details I'll start with the fact that I've been in the military for 90% of my adult life...and I carry the military values over to my civilian life also. So at my civilian job I find myself always staying busy doing things. I work in the distribution side of a company called Vistakon. They manufacture and distribute Acuvue contact lenses. So...the problem is....there is another person from the opposite shift here tonight(I work night shift). They are on overtime right now....but they aren't doing anything, and if they keep up with their usual behavior, won't do anything all night. Said person is up my boss's ass. Do I say something to my boss or go above his head since, most likely, nothing will be done if I go to my first boss? It burns me up knowing that I am working on straight time and this other person is sitting on their arse on overtime and not doing anything...at all! /rant"Age has absolutely nothing to do with knowledge, learning, respect, attitude, or personality." -yardhippie "Fight the air, and the air will kick your ass!!! skydiverbry 0 #7 March 24, 2013 Unfortunately no matter how you go about it I don't think it will remain anonymous no matter which route you take. There is already a conflict because of this person slackness so emailing or writing up the person will not more then likely not cause anymore conflicts then that already are there. I say bring this to the attention to someone higher up sooner then later. Bry-------------------------------------------------- Growing old is mandatory.Growing up is optional!! quade 4 #12 March 24, 2013 Don't do anything except document the event. Do NOT call the person out, do NOT notify the guy who is protecting him. Document what he's doing or not doing. Keep impeccable records of what he's doing versus what you're doing. Two files; one his, one yours. This includes video of him sleeping on the job or surfing for porn. If after a month or so it still bugs you, again, do NOT notify his boss or even his boss' boss. Notify HR and turn over the file on him. Keep the file on yourself secret; you'll want that in case somebody decides to retaliate or blame the late shift slacking on you.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

Always document everything...times, dates, what's happening & who else is in the area and saw/sees the behavior. Make two copies of everything. That being said, I 'motivated' a couple people I worked with by 'anonymously' leaving a clipboard with several days worth of said type documentation so they could find it as though it were accidentally left out by persons unknown...One guy I did that to got so paranoid he went to the boss...who got so paranoid HE too actually started do his job! ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~

ryoder 1,590 #15 March 24, 2013 Quote Nothing burns me worse than slackers getting paid the same as me. But after 29 years in the FAA I learned to ignore it. Well, what burns me worse is a (hopefully) one-of-a-kind jackass co-worker at my last job who: a) Treated his peers like subordinates, and ordered them to do his work. b) Refused to share project details with co-workers. c) Totally fabricated lies about his co-workers to our manager! d) Threw full-blown temper tantrums in meetings like a spoiled 5yo child. And the icing on the cake? Our clueless manager always took the side of the jackass, and never wanted to hear what really happened. I'll take a slacker over an asshole like that, any day of the week. On the bright side, I just learned from a guy who still works there that the clueless manager got demoted from his manager role."There are only three things of value: younger women, faster airplanes, and bigger crocodiles" - Arthur Jones. milehigheric 0 #18 March 24, 2013 IMO, if your the new guy and you start narking out on other people your going to have a bad time. It doesn't matter a whole lot who is morally right or wrong at the end of the day, but getting on bad terms with co-workers (especially bosses toilet roll holders) is never a good start. I have had several people on higher salary who do sweet fuck all while im busting my ass. It's annoying, but I think the best way is to just stick to your morals and try not to let it get to you. Your there to do a job, your getting paid to do your job so what does it really matter if Joe is sitting on his ass watching netflix? Thats a management problem, not yours. I find in most cases if you bring up his laziness every now and then in a joking manor, eventually he will feel obliged to do some work while your around. Saying that, the last time I was in this position the said individual took a swing at me at our Christmas party. I threw a few back and after it was broken up he quit his job and left. I'm not advocating violence, but this time it worked...and I got his pay packet in the end

I would never resort to physical violence. Although I have a martial arts background....its never acceptable at a place of employment. Besides that...I would walk away first! Nataly 38 #23 March 24, 2013 Whataver the circumstance, I have always found the most dignified and the best long-term solution is to focus on *your* job and make sure *you* get recognised for your work. It may be infuriating to see slack behaviour rewarded, but trust me when I say that in hard times, the slackers are the first to go... I've seen lots of organisations down-size in a tough economy - when companies are choosing the team that will save them from going bust, their only criteria is competence and NOT who is the best ass licker..."There is no problem so bad you can't make it worse." - Chris Hadfield « Sors le martinet et flagelle toi indigne contrôleuse de gestion. » - my boss
RMK 3 #24 March 24, 2013 Your first action should be to remove the names of the company/division you noted in your original post. Companies regularly (or pay third-party companies) to monitor their web “footprint”. This would take all of 5mins to narrow this web post to you. Two, you’ll find good or bad people in both civilian or military roles – note the concurrently running thread on here re the US military covering up serial rapists. Spend your time/effort in making yourself better, not acting as the “school monitor” of others around you. If you have a problem with a person, deal with that person; don’t run off to “tell” on them; this merely brings you down."Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"

But it seems that he's now past the 6-hour window programmed into this website. Thus I would urge the OP to contact a moderator and request that his OP be edited. -------- To the OP: Lots of good advice here, most of which is don't put your own self in harm's way because this guy and his supervisor are twats while you're doing an honest day's work. If you feel you must do something, the best thing (for you) would be to try to set him (and his supervisor) up so that what's going on gets noticed by someone higher up without it being traceable to you. If that doesn't work, then just keep this in mind: you're there to earn a wage for yourself, not to be the self-appointed cop in the company. We can't all be Inspector Javert.
