Nataly 38 #1 May 12, 2013 All week I've been learning/practicing my mom's favourite song on the guitar as a "gift" for mother's day... Trouble is, I still suck badly and am slightly embarassed every time I hear back the recordings of myself playing/wailing (I don't think it can really be called "singing")... Is this just a stupid idea?? Am I forever going to ruin this song for her?? Oh dear... wmw999 2,587 #2 May 12, 2013 You will so not ruin it for her that it's not even funny. She'll love it. Sing it with the love that you've put into trying to learn it. My son is almost 30, and this would be awesome. Unlikely in his case , but awesome. Wendy P. There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. skymama 37 #3 May 12, 2013 She will love it and she won't hear the mistakes like you do. All she's going to hear is the beautiful music that her daughter spent time on learning just for her. I bet you make her tear up. Great present! She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
oldwomanc6 60 #4 May 12, 2013 She will love it just as much as she loved the macaroni and bean picture you made in the second grade. It's not about a finished, professional-grade product. It's about the love that went into making it, and the love of receiving it. lisa WSCR 594 FB 1023 CBDB

MikeJD 0 #6 May 13, 2013 What everyone else said. It's a lovely idea. So did you go ahead with it? And would you care to share which song it is?

Nataly 38 #8 May 13, 2013 MikeJD What everyone else said. It's a lovely idea. So did you go ahead with it? And would you care to share which song it is? The song is "en décembre" by Pascal Lejeune - see link I did send it... I played/recorded it so many times trying to get it perfect... The first versions are full of mistakes... The last versions my fingers hurt so much I have to stop half-way!!! So I sent her the one that was the least horrible... One week trying to learn the damned thing... 5 hours trying to record it... 3 hours trying to upload it... What a fucking pain!!! She *loved* it, though. She thanked me straight away last night, and she emailed me again this morning to tell me she was playing it over and over and over "There is no problem so bad you can't make it worse." - Chris Hadfield « Sors le martinet et flagelle toi indigne contrôleuse de gestion. » - my boss

Sounds like a lot of takes Using that, you could have composited your song from the best parts of each take. You could even lay the vocal and guitar parts down separately, allowing you to concentrate on your performance for each. It might sound like cheating, but of course this is the way (virtually) all modern records are made!

I know all that but if it sounded too good she would never believe it was really me playing/singing!!! Besides, with so many horrible takes, editing it to sound/look good would have taken equally long or even longer! hether2783 0 #13 May 14, 2013 I have a two-year-old, by my mother still feels the same way about me that I do about him. Which is to say-- I bet your mom not only liked it, but also thought it was objectively the most amazing, professional, polished thing she had ever heard. No matter what it sounded like to you or your friends, your mom is probably thinking "My god, why didn't my daughter become a professional musician? She is so talented!"
