Seems like tying the landing rockets in with the weight-on-wheels sensor to prevent premature ignition could have prevented that.

That & some airframe sensors.. gotta wonder what it was doing to parts not meant to be bent that way.

Yep. Such as sunglasses for the guy who fired off the lower rockets. The upper JATOs did initial decelleration. The lowers were to be fired only on landing. The airman was blinded and thought they were on the runway.

Part of it was the speed of development. From idea to test bed was less than a month - amazingly short time. The computer controls had bugs so they went manual. Yes, so close...
