Calvin19 0 #2 June 21, 2013 I never liked that thing. The "flying car" claim is cute. It's a marginal execution of a terrible idea resulting in a go cart that can barely drive on the ground and does a worse job at flying. Can't launch or land in wind. Can't fly in turbulence. I'll give them a B+ on the flying frame though. -SPACE-

It's a marginal execution of a terrible idea resulting in a go cart that can barely drive on the ground and does a worse job at flying. Can't launch or land in wind. Can't fly in turbulence. I'll give them a B+ on the flying frame though. This occurred at my home airport. This fellow brought this (and his family) to Canada from Florida, and had been doing occasional test flights for the last few months. Without getting into detail, this is a continuing accident-in-waiting. It was also featured last night on The Discovery Channel. It's in this segment from the show: http://www.discovery.ca/episodeList.aspx?sid=13287 If that doesn't work, try this one: http://watch.discoverychannel.ca/#clip951732 This will give you a better idea of just how sketchy the design really is. (It immediately follows the portion about wing-suit proximity BASE in Norway) ETA: photographs I shot from one of it's flights
JohnMitchell 16 #4 June 21, 2013 All the drag dragging that string bag thru the air? Maybe a fun toy, but certainly not fast, efficient transportation, the supposed goal of the flying car. I'd like to have my skydiving rig double as scuba rig for tropical vacations. Good idea on paper maybe, but the execution will be overweight and cumbersome, a huge collection of compromises at best. theonlyski 8 #9 June 24, 2013 I'm no aeronautical engineer, but doesn't that look like the bottom half or so of the prop isn't getting a good air stream? Looks to me like it would be horribly inefficient."I may be a dirty pirate hooker...but I'm not about to go stand on the corner." iluvtofly DPH -7, TDS 578, Muff 5153, SCR 14890 I'm an asshole, and I approve this message
aphid 0 #10 June 24, 2013 I'm no engineer either, but I might be equally concerned at the steering/suspension lines looping so close to the unguarded prop. I guess that's why these are classified in the Experimental category by TC and the FAA.
format 1 #11 June 25, 2013 Quote I guess that's why these are classified in the Experimental category by TC and the FAA. Pretty obvious why it's Experimental. Opposite of obvious but still Experimental is this one with 1500fpm climb rate ...yet only Chileans and Finlanders get to legally jump out of those What a sexy ExperimentWhat goes around, comes later.
