Bignugget 0 #1 July 18, 2013 Anyone on here tried it? I know there are some pretty smart people on the boards here. Its available on STEAM and you can get it directly from them as well I think. https://kerbalspaceprogram.com/ For those who may be interested its surprisingly fun and challenging. They have a wiki specifically for it with tutorials and equations, they also have a big forum base with lots of different stuff. I am attempting this community generated challenge now: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/showthread.php/39630-Doing-it-Apollo-style Doing it Apollo style! Anyways figured some of you may enjoy it, you can build space planes as well as rockets, you plot all the navigation, plan the fuel loads out to make longer runs, etc. Quite in depth IMO. Enjoy!! And post pictures of your rockets if anyone makes one! I am still trying to get a rover mounted onto my LM for my Apollo mission, and docking on things in orbit is hard! Mad respect for Kevin Bacon in Apollo 13!

FlyingRhenquest 1 #3 July 18, 2013 Yup, I got it on sale on steam and liked it so much I bought a friend a copy. Seems like there's a fair bit of just eyeballing stuff but the math behind the scenes seems pretty solid. I'm bummed you can't speed up time while your engines are running -- I'd love to play with some ion engines but don't feel like waiting 9 months real time for my maneuver to complete.I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

Actually you can warp time 4x with engines thrusted up. If you look on youtube there is a tutorial about trying to get to light speed in the game, he says it would take 22 days roughly. Hahah. I still cant even dock in orbit on something My poor Kerbals never have a chance to survive their lunar landing without a LM.

Trying not to give away what i do for a living but from an engineering point of view it takes awhole lot of the guessing work out of orbital theory...basically it's more for entertainment with a touch of simulation. I'd recommend getting the MechJeb addon from here : http://kerbalspaceport.com/ Trust me, you'll thank me later if you are not using it. Ancient Launch mod is also nice since it has pre-pad rockets from the Mercury to Apollo launches. Finally, this dude http://www.youtube.com/user/szyzyg has great tutorials on the game. The other mods are rikey dinkey so I'd recommend waiting for full release. Look me up if you guys have STeam..my name is "MouthFromGoonies"

So to make an orbital transfer with ion engines, I'd only have to wait 2 months of real time instead of 9 months. Hooray! The secret to docking, I'm told, is common reference frame. That's a fancy way of saying always point your vehicles the same way. Then you just align to your common reference frame and slide 'er in. Or something. You don't really get to light speed in KSP. You get to "Light" speed. Kerbals don't have to worry about relativity and stuff. Which already makes it seem like a better designed universe than the one we live in.I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here? GooniesKid 0 #7 July 19, 2013 Another secret to docking is to have both objects have a non-elliptical orbit as possible. This can be done but it takes alot of fuel if you're new to it. when you get both objects on a non-eliptical orbit, then try to match each other's orbit to increase the chance for an encounter. Again this will take a few more burns if you have not done this. Finally, when you have done both 1 and 2 then it's just a matter of time when you will have an encounter no much greater than 10km apart. From there it's all about using RCS until you dock. If you're not using MechJeb i would recommend it,,it makes launching, maneuvering, and docking manageable and easier.
FlyingRhenquest 1 #8 July 20, 2013 IagoThat is so cool. I played the demo for about an hour, blew up some rockets on the pad, and managed to get one into outer space. Downloading my full copy now! I may get this for my 7-year old techie wiz niece. It really is a pretty cool introduction to all that sort of stuff. I get the feeling it's kind of how we did rocketry back when we put those guys on the moon. Feels like we just sort of eyeballed it, duct-taped a rocket together and shot a guy into space without worrying too much about the consequences. You better watch out though, or she'll end up wanting a $400 book on orbital mechanics next.I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here? skydiver30960 0 #9 July 20, 2013 I'm looking at this program like I would look at a full syringe of heroin: I know that it would only take one hit to swallow up my life; leaving my job, marriage, and home in shambles. I have enough crap in my life that does that already! Elvisio "back away, slowly" Rodriguez
