Nataly 38 #1 July 19, 2013 I got given a cuban cigar and I read up on it and started finding it interesting... How cigars are made, the different types, how it should be smoked, et cetera, et cetera... I was going to give it away to someone who would appreciate it but I got curious and I thought - why not? Well, I have never smoked, and I expected it would probably make me sick... It didn't, but it's like 2 hours later and I have brushed my teeth (and tongue and pallet and gums) 5 times and the icky taste isn't going away... Funny... I've always liked the *smell* of cigars and somehow I thought I might actually enjoy smoking one. Nope. I should have given it away... NorrinRadd 0 #2 July 19, 2013 I used to enjoy smoking the occasional cigar. But my experiences became more and more like what you described. They just don't appeal to me anymore. Have you tried sheesha? That is a fun way to smoke tobacco. Like inhaling flavoured air.Why drive myself crazy trying to be normal, when I am already at crazy? I'm not trying to convince you to smoke another one and "give it a chance", because they are carcinogenic, and I take that very, very seriously. That being said, I imagine the taste of, say, a really good quality coffee, drunk black, might taste pretty yucky to someone who's never gradually acquired a taste for something like that. Similarly, tobacco smoke most definitely has flavor, that varies quite a bit from one variety or blend to another. And once a taste (not addiction; taste) is acquired, an excellent cigar or pipe tobacco can be as flavor-pleasurable as a cup of strong, high-quality black coffee. I thought the flavours were complex and interesting... It felt a little tingly on my lips after a while... I liked the "ritual" aspect of it... Cutting it properly, lighting it evenly, the sensation of the smoke and blowing it out, taking the time to sit and smoke, et cetera, et cetera. But the lingering taste I don't find pleasant at all Anyway... Was worth a try, I suppose, but it still seems like a bit of a waste. FlyingRhenquest 1 #11 July 19, 2013 Bwahaha. I'm pretty sure I didn't smoke through all my teenage years because once, when I was about 7 or 8, my grandpa and I were doing an about-2-hour hike up to Waimaia Falls Park in Hawaii. He was smoking his pipe and I asked if I could try it. He said sure and gave it to me with no explanation as to what to do with it. I was spitting for the rest of the hike trying to get the taste out of my mouth. I took to smoking a pipe myself later on. I can do (or was able to do) cigars while I was doing that but I much preferred my pipe. After a while I noticed that whenever I smoked my pipe I had a headache the next day. I assume that was my body telling me it wanted more nicotine. I didn't like the headache and I didn't want to smoke often enough that I'd never get it, so I just stopped. Funnily enough, because of the pipe smoking, taking a puff of a cigarette doesn't feel like anything to me. It's like puffing on air. It seems to me like an annoying and expensive habit with no reward whatsoever. For me at least nicotine doesn't seem to be as addictive as caffeine. I was able to quit smoking cold turkey for the last decade or so. I've never managed to quit caffeine for more than a few months.I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?
JohnMitchell 16 #12 July 20, 2013 Nataly My boyfriend suggested a different type of syrup... Different kind of cigar. . . A good friend gave me a really nice cigar for my retirement. I haven't had one in years. It's sitting on my desk for one of these summer nights; cold beer, bonfire and the stars overhead.
tan 0 #13 July 21, 2013 I've never smoked a cigarette either, not even during my 2 year stint in the Navy with my buddy being a chimney beside me. But this one time, an Austrian girl was smoking what I now know was a cigarello, and it just smelled so sweet and fantastic, and I thought, "what the hell, still isn't a cigarette".Tried it once, twice, no effect? They told me to hold it "in", and being the non-smoker that I was, I thought they meant deep "in" your lungs...... Of course, hilarity ensued.Problem was, while I was going through my usual morning sneezing fits the next morning, I kept smelling that scent from the cigarello.. Checked the chair, places I touched, my hands and arms, and even my hair, and I just couldn't figure out where I'd left such a concentration of the scent from the previous night. And then I picked up one of the tissues that I'd just sneezed into, and .. discovered my lungs' way of saying "right back at you". Good luck with your gums and teeth.. for it took my lungs a week to clear the remnants of that one encounter...

One of my co-workers wanted to try my pipe and unlike my granddad I was nice enough to tell him not to inhale. He inhaled anyway. A lot. Even though he was used to smoking unfiltered camels, he turned green and started coughing, I'm sure like I did the first time I tried my graddad's pipe. Nataly 38 #15 July 21, 2013 I had read up on it so I knew not to inhale the smoke. Did have a big headache the next day but overall I thought I qould feel worse from all the horror stories I read. Mostly it was the lingering after taste that stayed for hours that was unpleasant. Still, glad I tried it once anyway."There is no problem so bad you can't make it worse." - Chris Hadfield « Sors le martinet et flagelle toi indigne contrôleuse de gestion. » - my boss
davjohns 1 #16 July 22, 2013 There are different cigar smokers. I had a Cuban the other night for the first time. I kept forgetting they are legal here and I wanted to try one. While I was smoking it, I recalled the times on Thursday nights in Iraq when my buddies and I had a cigar and threw darts. Thursday night is the equivalent of Friday night for Muslims. Some of those buddies are gone. You are right that cigars and pipes should be puffed and not inhaled. For that reason and the ritual effect that you mention, they actually reduce cancer rates in users. Now, if a cigarette smoker swaps to cigars, they still inhale and the cancer risk is back. But for those who do it for the ritual, it is part of a relaxing routine. You hit on the biggest downside for me. I love the smell of a pipe and like the smell of good cigars. But the aftertaste lingers...into the next day. Helps make me irregular about my smoking. I've smoked four or five pipes in the past four years and one cigar.I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

For everyone else they're still increasing your risk for a variety of wonderfully charming mouth and throat cancers. If you go overboard, the pipe stem in your mouth or cigar in your mouth can increase the liklihood of mouth cancer. Most anything in your mouth too much does the same. (don't tell the women) I consulted with a doctor and researched before taking up the pipe. With limited use and absence of inhaling, it reduces the risk of cancer of all types. The only study ever done that differentiated between pipe, cigar, and cigarettes found statistically significant differences. Pretty much every study that ever administered too much of anything to lab rats...found the tested substance to cause cancer. MikeJD 0 #23 July 23, 2013 I've never really smoked, but I must have inhaled plenty of the stuff in my youth when everyone puffed away in pubs and restaurants, on the top decks of buses and even - which seems astonishing to me now - in underground stations (there was already a smoking ban on the tube trains themselves by the time I first lived in London). Although I'm not a crusader againt smoking, it is wonderful these days to wake up after the occasional heavy night just hung over, rather than hung over and also smelling like an ashtray. Still, as a 'third party' I actually do like the aroma of pipe tobacco and cigar smoke is not too bad. I still can't stand the smell of cigarettes! Whenever people mention Cuban cigars, it always puts me in mind of how they were supposedly 'rolled on the thighs of dusky maidens'. But maybe that's just me.
