2 in a row, I need advice...

Recommended Posts

Well, last week Chromeboy posted about how I owed cases for my first cutaway on my 39th jump, I finally jumped again today, and guess what happened on my 40th jump, cutaway number 2 (on borrowed gear). :(
The person who packed my main forgot to cock the pilot chute, so I pull, and wait, and wait, fold my arms across my chest and put because I'm sure not going to cut away again, reach back to see if I can pull out some bridle and unpack manually (this didn't work :)Before that it was a great jump, I did the best exit I've ever done, went directly into a stable sit, was totally stable, decided to try some 90 degree turns in sit, went awesome. Back to belly to slow down and pull, and blech.
...So what now, I love skydiving, and don't want to give up, especially when there is so much more I can/want to do, but at the same time I'm afraid to borrow more gear and have another reserve ride. Everyone is saying it can't happen 3 times in a row, but what if... I can't really afford to buy 1 reserve repack/bottle of booze, let alone 2 or three.

Ummm......*fwap* bad boy, next time check your gear, that is what the little window on the pilot chute is for. Especially when borrowing gear, checking everything, cause who knows what is wrong with it that they didn't tell you.

And buy gear so you can cutaway your own stuff!

I did buy gear, I cut it away last week. Main is currently at the manufacturers getting new top skin on a couple of cells. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow, they have another rig that needs a reserve repack pretty soon anyway :)--

forgot to cock the pilot chute

What exactly does this mean, and is there a way that it could have been prevented by doing a proper gear check ? No offense, Pete, if it could not have been avoided by checking your gear.

Well, you see, when a skydiver loves his parachute very much, and it's cold out, they'll snuggle together, and... Well, your jumpmasters should have really explained this when you were younger... but I guess lots of people turn to the internet for this kind of information these days. :D:D
Seriously, it refers to 're-arming' collapsible pilot chutes so that they are fully inflated when you release them during deployment. Most systems do have a way to check that without actually unpacking the pilot chute.

2 things i do whether i'm using a packer or not.
first: stow the brakes.
second: cock the pilot chute and check it by throwing it up and making sure it inflates by pulling on the bridle.
when doing a pin check, check the window in the bridle too.

Hrm, yeah, like that's motivation to not do it again ;)

next time check your gear

Eeks, thanks for pointing out that I screwed up, again. You're right, I did a pin check, checked 3-rings, etc, but skipped the PC window check, Doh. Oh well, now I can call this a learning experience. I think I was also complacent about it becuase it was fresh out of an inspection/double repack. Maybe I should just take up golf .

Pete, lol. What's up man? It's just a couple of cutaways! That is why you have a reserve! As for packing error PM me the news. Man, whenever we discussed cutaways a short time ago I had no idea that you would be needing to do it so often! If it is three in a row I will pay for your repack! :)Glad you are safe and jump again today!

I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but the window on my PC bridle is completely useless and the colored section never lines up so I don't know if that's always the best solution -
I can't believe the person forgot to cock it though - can't be much worse than a PC in tow - good job on the cutaway....

"but skipped the PC window check"

Surprisingly (or not so much), skydivers all over do this ALOT! It's not really because they forget, but as many of us know, the kill-line on the collapsable PC can shrink up to two inches or so... so, that nice green window is rarely ever there even if the PC is cocked (I know that it wasn't on my old rig, until I colored it back in that is). Simply checking the window may not be enough, especially on borrowed gear... pull that sucker out & inflate it a few times, make sure that it's going to catch air & float nicely back to the ground. Re-packing a Pilot Chute is a lot cheaper than repacking a reserve, a little less stressful too.

That's good to know - I always wonder whether it's best to cut away a PC in tow in case the main deploys on reserve opening - Seems like the best route is to cut it away first and then deploy the reserve. I guess it's better to have a plan, than to try to decide when it actually happens and then waste time trying to decide what to do.....

Rhonda~
Have a rigger look at your PC could be the line has stretched. Perhaps needs to have a new marking.
As for me.....if I have someone pack my rig, I always repack my PC and check the line. I have had one too many hard pulls and one at hard deck. I know how my rig likes it's pc stowed, so I ensure that I keep my little lovely happy.
Additionally, if you are having someone pack for you, please stow the brakes. You will have a really happy packer if you practice this simple thing.
It only takes a little pixie dust......

Actually it's the opposite, your kill line has probably shrank and needs to be replaced, for most kill line PC it is a quick and easy fix. I think in gear and rigging hooknswoop posted an artical on pilot chute maintenance he wrote, if he hasn't yet I'll have him do it today. :)
