Spy38W 0 #1 March 24, 2002 Well, last week Chromeboy posted about how I owed cases for my first cutaway on my 39th jump, I finally jumped again today, and guess what happened on my 40th jump, cutaway number 2 (on borrowed gear). The person who packed my main forgot to cock the pilot chute, so I pull, and wait, and wait, fold my arms across my chest and put because I'm sure not going to cut away again, reach back to see if I can pull out some bridle and unpack manually (this didn't work Before that it was a great jump, I did the best exit I've ever done, went directly into a stable sit, was totally stable, decided to try some 90 degree turns in sit, went awesome. Back to belly to slow down and pull, and blech....So what now, I love skydiving, and don't want to give up, especially when there is so much more I can/want to do, but at the same time I'm afraid to borrow more gear and have another reserve ride. Everyone is saying it can't happen 3 times in a row, but what if... I can't really afford to buy 1 reserve repack/bottle of booze, let alone 2 or three.--~Captain CutawayI think I'm an inch shorter from that opening
Jessica 0 #2 March 24, 2002 LOL! You win, I had two in FIVE jumps. It certainly could happen on your next jump...but it probably won't. I look at every jump as a 50/50 chance of a mal: either I'll have one or I won't.Get back up there! And buy gear so you can cutaway your own stuff! Luv,Cutaway KidNo, it's not updated. skycat 0 #3 March 24, 2002 Ummm......*fwap* bad boy, next time check your gear, that is what the little window on the pilot chute is for. Especially when borrowing gear, checking everything, cause who knows what is wrong with it that they didn't tell you.
Spy38W 0 #4 March 24, 2002 Quote And buy gear so you can cutaway your own stuff! I did buy gear, I cut it away last week. Main is currently at the manufacturers getting new top skin on a couple of cells. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow, they have another rig that needs a reserve repack pretty soon anyway --~Captain CutawayI think I'm an inch shorter from that opening
Skyrose7 0 #5 March 24, 2002 wow, I guess I just look at it as if you got through two cutaways safely, keep jumpin'. YOu've stocked up on mals. Good luck& keep your head up!The mind is like a parachute--it works better when it is open. JUMP.
PalmettoTiger 1 #6 March 24, 2002 Hey, don't be so glum! Look at it this way: you know you're current on emergency procedures, and now you've got a decent nickname with a funny story to it. wingnut 0 #7 March 24, 2002 that sux dude, don't let it discurage you though....and as a rule of thumb i lways use.... if i didn't pack the main i aint jumping it.....as for the reserve, i trust the faa to say i don't have a moron for a rigger.......(not alwas true though)"i may not go to heven, i hope you go to hell"-C.C. Cornholio 0 #8 March 24, 2002 Quote forgot to cock the pilot chute What exactly does this mean, and is there a way that it could have been prevented by doing a proper gear check ? No offense, Pete, if it could not have been avoided by checking your gear. -Matt__________________________________________If first you don't succeed....skydiving is not for you. PalmettoTiger 1 #9 March 24, 2002 Well, you see, when a skydiver loves his parachute very much, and it's cold out, they'll snuggle together, and... Well, your jumpmasters should have really explained this when you were younger... but I guess lots of people turn to the internet for this kind of information these days. Seriously, it refers to 're-arming' collapsible pilot chutes so that they are fully inflated when you release them during deployment. Most systems do have a way to check that without actually unpacking the pilot chute.PTigerI'm stepping through the doorAnd I'm floating in a most peculiar way
scotts 0 #10 March 24, 2002 2 things i do whether i'm using a packer or not.first: stow the brakes.second: cock the pilot chute and check it by throwing it up and making sure it inflates by pulling on the bridle. when doing a pin check, check the window in the bridle too. Spy38W 0 #11 March 24, 2002 Quote Ummm......*fwap* bad boy Hrm, yeah, like that's motivation to not do it again Quote next time check your gear Eeks, thanks for pointing out that I screwed up, again. You're right, I did a pin check, checked 3-rings, etc, but skipped the PC window check, Doh. Oh well, now I can call this a learning experience. I think I was also complacent about it becuase it was fresh out of an inspection/double repack. Maybe I should just take up golf .--~Captain CutawayI think I'm an inch shorter from that opening
ChromeBoy 0 #12 March 24, 2002 Pete, lol. What's up man? It's just a couple of cutaways! That is why you have a reserve! As for packing error PM me the news. Man, whenever we discussed cutaways a short time ago I had no idea that you would be needing to do it so often! If it is three in a row I will pay for your repack! Glad you are safe and jump again today!
rhino 0 #13 March 24, 2002 Skycat flamed you so I won't bother 2 cutaways in a row!! Damn!! Beer!! More beer!! The person who didn't cock the pilot chute should chip in!!Glad your still here Semper Fi ..... http:// www.aahit.com
Rhonda66 0 #14 March 24, 2002 I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but the window on my PC bridle is completely useless and the colored section never lines up so I don't know if that's always the best solution - I can't believe the person forgot to cock it though - can't be much worse than a PC in tow - good job on the cutaway....Rhonda
Merrick 0 #15 March 24, 2002 Quote"but skipped the PC window check"Surprisingly (or not so much), skydivers all over do this ALOT! It's not really because they forget, but as many of us know, the kill-line on the collapsable PC can shrink up to two inches or so... so, that nice green window is rarely ever there even if the PC is cocked (I know that it wasn't on my old rig, until I colored it back in that is). Simply checking the window may not be enough, especially on borrowed gear... pull that sucker out & inflate it a few times, make sure that it's going to catch air & float nicely back to the ground. Re-packing a Pilot Chute is a lot cheaper than repacking a reserve, a little less stressful too."Pammi's Hemp/Skydiving Jewelry"
n2skdvn 0 #16 March 24, 2002 1st how old is the pilot chute2nd are you cocking the pilot chute right???have your rigger take a look at it!if ya can't dodge it RAM IT !!!!!!click me
rhino 0 #17 March 24, 2002 Did the main actually come out of the container? Did it come out on deployment of the reserve? Get back to the packing area to find somebody brought the main still stuffed in the D-bag with a collapsed pilot chute over. rhino 0 #18 March 24, 2002 I cock the pc before I even start to pack it.. Then once again when it is packed sitting in the container before I close it just to make sure. Semper Fi ..... http:// www.aahit.com
Rhonda66 0 #19 March 24, 2002 That's good to know - I always wonder whether it's best to cut away a PC in tow in case the main deploys on reserve opening - Seems like the best route is to cut it away first and then deploy the reserve. I guess it's better to have a plan, than to try to decide when it actually happens and then waste time trying to decide what to do.....Rhonda
rhino 0 #20 March 24, 2002 Those who psycho pack REALLY need to keep an eye on the pilot chute.. It tends to want to creek back,, Semper Fi ..... http:// www.aahit.com
bbarnhouse 0 #21 March 24, 2002 Rhonda~Have a rigger look at your PC could be the line has stretched. Perhaps needs to have a new marking. As for me.....if I have someone pack my rig, I always repack my PC and check the line. I have had one too many hard pulls and one at hard deck. I know how my rig likes it's pc stowed, so I ensure that I keep my little lovely happy.Additionally, if you are having someone pack for you, please stow the brakes. You will have a really happy packer if you practice this simple thing. It only takes a little pixie dust......
rhino 0 #22 March 24, 2002 You should stow the breaks the moment your feet hit the ground so your lines don't get twisted..Rhino Semper Fi ..... http:// www.aahit.com

skycat 0 #24 March 24, 2002 Actually it's the opposite, your kill line has probably shrank and needs to be replaced, for most kill line PC it is a quick and easy fix. I think in gear and rigging hooknswoop posted an artical on pilot chute maintenance he wrote, if he hasn't yet I'll have him do it today.
