JerryBaumchen 1,451 #26 August 22, 2013 Hi BV, Quote Yep... Maryann was the hottie. Looks like you are in good company. From the Wiki: In a debate to which girl was more attractive out of Ginger and Mary Ann, Mary Ann has continuously outpolled Ginger. Mary Ann's wholesome girl-next-door looks caused her to be more favorable to being a heterosexual man's dream wife and women's model of themselves. Since the show's debut, Mary Ann has been known as the show's most popular character. Bob Denver (aka Gilligan) admitted he was a Mary Ann man and that Dawn Wells got at least 3–5,000 fan letters weekly from men, women, kids, and teenagers, etc. Mary Ann's creator Sherwood Schwartz later admitted that he didn't see Mary Ann or the Professor as prominent characters during the first few episodes and that he later corrected his mistake by giving them larger roles and opening-cast-billing. swisschris62 0 #27 August 22, 2013 Interesting little Gillian's island trivia. So the writers original vision for the story really changed quite a bit as it developed. Funny how he gave Maryanne and the Professor more prominent roles but didnt dirty ginger up over time ( ya know, that tough island living) to get her to become a more likeable character. Thurston and Lovee were doomed from the start.
LuckyMcSwervy 0 #28 August 22, 2013 quade ***I thought I saw every single one when they were new! Maybe my memory is going? It was right there in the opening title sequence of every episode. I don't know how anybody who watched it didn't know. I watched the link from You Tube you posted and it still didn't ring any bells. I did want to be a skydiver when I was a young kid but that was because there was a small jump operation at one of the the little airports where my Dad kept his plane. I'm sad I can't clearly remember the BW opening. Always be kinder than you feel.
LuckyMcSwervy 0 #29 August 22, 2013 ryoder *** Far from it, but I also remember the theme to "Gilligan's Island" despite never yearning to be shipwrecked. Bullshit. We *all* fantasized about being shipwrecked with Ginger and MaryAnn!HA! Ginger used to be my nickname from one of my Dad's coworker cop friends when I was wearing my hair color auburn and before I had a small mole on my face removed. Always be kinder than you feel. quade 4 #38 August 23, 2013 wolfriverjoeYou do know that each of the characters represented one of the "7 Deadly Sins", right? I've heard this as theory, but lay it out and I don't think it holds up in the cases of The Professor or Mary Ann. This same sort of quasi-correlation goes on all the time with various things by fans. Doesn't mean it's true though.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

Does anyone else remember how many coconut cream pies Gilligan could eat? And apparently, Sherwood Schwartz himself admitted it in his book. And there was another subtext (again, admitted by Schwartz) that it was also a representation of society and democracy. The Howells were the elite, Ginger was Hollywood Celebrity, the Professor was academia, the Skipper was the military and Gilligan and Mary Ann were the common people. Most people missed these subtleties (I certainly did when I watched it as a kid), but they made the show what it was, without preaching or shoving it in our faces."There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit."
