Ha so I've been on site since Friday, had training all weekend and did one day of work on site. Now it's looking like I'm going to get to spend the next day or so hiding in camp while cyclone rusty roles thru and makes a mess of things.

This job is awesome!

I need an umbrella :|

Haha seriously, I've had one in my backpack for the last 8 months and sure enough I took it out before flying to work >:(

Looks like I'm getting paid to hang out in my room and watch the movie channel for another couple days. It's been light rain for the past 2 days and meant to get messy tomorrow. Heavy rains in the desert means flooding. Should be interesting.

that a really slow moving cyclone mate, with 200km+ winds it's going to cause a fair amount of damage to the towns

Only around the eye. How far out are hurricane force winds? I know you don't call it one. :D But 200kmh comes out to about 125 mph so that's a category 3 on our side.

it's a cat 3 now and expected to increase.
the problem isn't the speed of the wind itself, it's the slow moving nature of the cyclone.
Because it's moving so slow, the winds have a lot more time to do damage.

From the met bureau
Quote

This is a large tropical cyclone and its slow movement is likely to result in
an extended period of destructive winds near the track, with rainfall that is
heavier than that associated with a typical system. Widespread very heavy
rainfall overnight and on Wednesday is likely to lead to MAJOR FLOODING in the
De Grey catchment. Significant flooding is also likely in the Fortescue
catchment and in Pilbara coastal streams.
