You know, Squeak, there are actually two ropes attached to the ceiling of the cockpit, coiled up behind small panels. They are for the flight crew to make emergency ground egresses out those very windows.

~Actually they're little trapeze bars bars attached to steel cables with a decelerator system that slows the descent as the cable pays out.

In a 747 there is an escape hatch in the overhead panel with 5 or 6 of the handles surrounding the hole...problem is ya gotta BE an NBA center to get to it!

I got to make a mock emergency egress using that system on a 747 waiting to be turned into beer cans in OK City some years back...FUN!
