Pilot vs. Sabre2

Recommended Posts

i demoed the sabre 2 in the states and ordered one .while waiting for it to arrive , back in england i jumped a demo pilot 168 , that had very little jumps on it . i found it to be a wonderful canopy and began to wonder if i had ordered the wrong one , on getting my sabre 2 170 , i am glad to say thats what i went for , i do find the openings not as forgiving as the pilot but i love the extra bit of caricter it has .
i just love my sabre2

This may be a stupid question but..
What makes the pilot open so much smoother than a sabre2? Arent there several factors that go into that? Packing etc... If the sabre2 has violent offheading openings why is it so popular?

Seems to be a tradeoff between performance once the canopy is open and how nicely it opens.

I can add that the pilot also packs easier then a brand new sabre2. I just tried packing mine for the first time...@_$*&#*&*@@@@ >:(

Agree!! I hate my Pilot 210 for being a bitch when I bag her. But I'm so glad i didn't go for a S2, I'm told that new PD fabric is a LOT worse when they are new :D

Making that conclusion is not justified from a comparison of 2 canopies, and many would probably not agree that the Sabre2 performs better than the Pilot.

There are some key factors that contribute to the opening characteristics that have nothing at all to do with the performance when open, such as the brake setting, slider size/shape.
People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am

I'm not sure about the Sabre2 configuration, but 2 characteristics of the Pilot that I noticed that would contribute to soft openings are:
- HUGE slider (it really was massive on my 150)
- Nose inlets are angled downwards at quite a steep angle

Some people I know will only jump PD canopies. That can be just a preference thing. Each manufacturer produces canopies with different characteristics. At the moment I have a Safire2 129; before that I put ~330 jumps on a Pilot 150.

The Sabre2 will, at moderate/high wingloadings, will swoop quite well (from comments I've received from other canopy pilots that own them). It dives more in any turn that an equivalent Pilot and Safire2 at any W/L.

I just made my first jump on my new sabre2. The opening was softer then any of my 100 jumps on my pilot. I have never had such a soft opening..The slider took forever to come down :)
I must be an excellent packer....

When packed according to PD's recommendation, the Sabre2 does not have violent offheading openings..
I was doing all sorts of things to my parachute before ( I had a Triathlon before switching to a Sabre2) and had weird openings all the time.

Now, I pack 100% according to PD's instructions, which are basically a normal Pro-pack packjob, and I get nice, consistent, onheading openings..

And it's so popular, cause it dives more, dives longer and swoops further than the Pilot.. :P

I've got 1100+ jumps on my Sabre2's and I am going to put probably another 1000 on them.. it is an amazing, all around great canopy..

You better win Roy. Iwan sucks as a canooy Pilot!:D

You just make sure that a Mamba 132 demo shows up in Byron sometime soon.. :P
I'll talk appropriately about that canopy on here...

The sooner it gets here, the sooner I'll lay off on the Sabre2 vs. Pilot comments.. :P

How is FL treating you buddy?

Actually, I'd really like to demo the 140 and the 132. I am thinking of switching to Mambas for 2006.. but I need to demo first. I'll send in a request.

Why would you think I'd want a 150? I'm not that old.. :D:ph34r::D:S:S
