Sending a DVD online

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to send one of my brothers the contents of a DVD that the other brother had made from some home movies from when we were all adorable children. Based on comments I see online, I don't think it's just a matter of copying the files -- or is it?

There's an autorun.ini in the root directory, a VIDEO_TS and an AUDIO_TS (audio being empty, since there is no sound).

Can I in fact just copy them, and then he can download to his own DVD and play it on his TV, or at least play it from a directory on his PC?

thanks
Wendy P.

It's possible to just send the files, him copy them to another blank DVD and then play them on his regular DVD player, however, that puts a certain burden on him to burn the DVD.

If I was going to do this, I'd probably RIP the DVD using something like Handbrake, then upload the file to a private YouTube channel, one only you and your friends and family have access to. This way you'd never have to resend files if anyone else wanted to see them and the quality wouldn't be all that degraded from the original.

No postage. Very little delay compared to snail mail. Instant gratification for him as soon as the files are available on YouTube.

Generally, step one is to run a utility to convert the DVD to an ISO file. Now you have a single file you can move, or mount as a disc, or burn to another DVD.

By far the easiest thing to do, if he's not too picky about the format, is rip it to video files and put it up on youtube. Just be sure to make the video private and stuff. Youtube also limits you to 10 minutes of video unless you fill out a form promising to not to post pirated content on the site.

If he (or you) don't want to deal with the magical incantations involved, you can still rip the files to video, put them on a thumb drive and send that to him. Microsoft movie maker can be downloaded free from Microsoft's site and can rip unencrypted DVDs quite easily and also seems to be able to deal with at least some encrypted DVDs without a lot more trouble.

If he is too picky about the format, well burning a DVD that will actually play in a DVD player is pretty esoteric. You could probably find some software that can do it, though. Last time I did it was several years ago on a Linux machine, from the command line. It was interesting from a technical perspective but way more trouble than it was worth.
