Horrible Day...

Well, I found the MFers You Tube channel and he already has a snazzy little video up of the fire and the drone action. I saw he credited his wife with taking lots of pictures. And other neighbor gets some photo creds as well. I was talking to her earlier, didn't know they were a couple. She actually crossed the police tape and was taking pictures. You can see the family on the sidewalk by the remains of the house. Wow. Just wow.

:D That stuff died with my Grandfather. I think that's why most of my relatives were cops. :D

And you know what? My memory told me he was flying the drone with the fire trucks still there. The video shows me they were the big, loud electric company bucket trucks where the fire trucks were parked but the cops and other emergency services people were still there.

Did they say the cause was from a space heater? ABC World News was talking about a fire in Jersey, and it seemed similar to this incident.

No official cause just yet. Just 20 minutes ago I got a text from one of my girlfriends who is a very good friend of the homeowner's new wife. I asked if they could say an official cause yet and she said no. :(

There was a big fire in Camden, NJ yesterday. That may be space heater related. I saw it on the news last night IIRC.

So...we give the press, emergency responders and the cops a pass. Who then sell their material, or post it publicly.
Cops are using FB in real-time these days.
How is that different???

What happens in public is just that.

I'm happy the cops didn't put together a 2:14 video of the destruction with some snazzy Pink Flyod music and picture/video fade outs and other graphics.

FWIW, I think I just may be too close to the situation to be fair. I'm a news whore. I love news. All news, all the time. I just don't like it on my quiet little street in the middle of the blueberry fields. I think neighbors should protect neighbors (except the assholes directly across the street from me but that's another story :P ).

What sort of space heaters are the norm there?

I always hated the coil type radiant heater and kerosene (blech!) by far as the worst!

I have no idea. I have a little fan electric one for under my work desk in my office. Years ago, in my old house when I was married, we had a kerosene heater before the old, drafty windows were replaced to take the chill out of the house in a family room.

I don't even know if they make them or use them any longer. I have a gas fireplace with a remote control so I use that for a quick fix downstairs.

ETA: He also has a shitload of vids of him flying this thing all around the neighborhood.

How's the nude sun-bathing going?
I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet..

But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

It's not going to happen this year, that's for sure. Funny enough, none of that happened this year (when his videos posted started - who knows when he really started) because I didn't open the pool because I went away for a long time over the summer and didn't want to be exposed to the liability.

A stark example of the folly of voluteer fire departments and a lack of residentail sprinkler systems. I was a carreer firefighter for 26 years. The volunteers are obsolete and no one will do a thing about it. Your best line of defense against a home fire is a residentail sprinkler system, yet almost no one will spring for the extra $$$ to put one in.

Funny you say that. When this house was being built I inquired about having them installed and was told it wasn't in the original approval plans for all of the house models/elevations and it would have to go back before council for review/approval. My Dad told me to have them installed but I didn't listen since it was going to extend the construction by months, I never followed through with it. I was also told I was the only person in the 90 house development that asked out an interior fire suppression system, which I found surprising.

Just last week I heard something on the news that New Jersey is thinking about requiring sprinklers in all new residential construction. I was on the fence with "requiring" but after the other day, I'm changing my tune.

I keep all the internal doors closed at night and there are extinguishers in the master bedroom, the connecting hall, living room and kitchen (There's also a large fire blanket in the kitchen and the hall). There are phones in both bedrooms and the living room.

If the smoke alarm goes off, I check the bedroom door with the back of my hand. If it's hot then we're sitting tight or going out of the window - if it's not then we're going out of the front door.

We practice the evacuation routes at least once a month and the smoke alarms are cleaned (vacuum cleaner) and tested once a week.

I think the most heartstopping way to wake up is the fire alarm at 3am. Those milliseconds before you realize it's the low battery signal are the worst seconds in my life. I still get up and will run down the stairs with shaky legs from being scared and search my house from top to basement. Logic tells me if it was a fire they all would start going off, not just one beeping sporadically but I still must check. I have 2 separate smoke/carbon monoxide set ups. One is hard wired from the original construction (they're the suckers that beep in the middle of the night) and the other are wireless sensors that transmit with the security system. They send low battery signals to the control panel.

Well, the house next door burned. Intuitively, that would suggest the odds of another house in the neighborhood burning are now astronomically low. (Don't jump on the bad logic. I know much more about probability theory than average.)

But if you ever saw, "The World According to Garp", you will recall the scene where he and his wife had just finished touring a house they were considering buying. A plane flew into the house as they stood on the street. Garp turned to the agent and declared, "We'll take it! What are the odds anything bad could ever happen to this house again!"

Seriously, I'm not sure a cost/benefit analysis would justify a sprinkler system in the average residence. A fire-proof safe for cash, important documents, and valuables coupled with insurance is probably all the risks justify for most people. Of course, walking through the house with a video recorder and documenting your stuff and serial numbers for an insurance claim may be a good use of your time. Just make sure you update it about annually and have the file in the safe, with someone else, or on the net. It really doesn't take long.

Eh, it's a fine point, I guess. It all has to do with the level of obnoxiousness, I suppose. The press has a job to do, and sometimes they have to be obnoxious about it. But this guy was just a douche-nozzle.
