normiss 893 #26 February 4, 2014 E-cigs??? A preliminary analysis of e-cigarette cartridges by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2009 identified that some contain tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs), known cancer-causing agents.[15][16] The amounts of TSNAs present were on par with existing NRT products like nicotine gum and inhalers. The FDA's analysis also detected diethylene glycol, a poisonous and hygroscopic liquid, in a single cartridge manufactured by Smoking Everywhere and nicotine in one[17] cartridge claimed to be nicotine-free.[15][16] Diethylene glycol was found in a cartridge tested in 2009 by the FDA, but in 2011 researchers reviewed the data and noted that 15 other studies had failed to find any evidence of this chemical in e-cigarettes.[18] Further concerns were raised over inconsistent amounts of nicotine delivered when drawing on the device.[17] In some e-cigarettes, "Tobacco-specific impurities suspected of being harmful to humans – anabasine, myosmine, and β-nicotyrine – were detected in a majority of the samples tested." It is not clear if these chemicals were detectable in exhaled vapour.[19] The UK National Health Service noted that the toxic chemicals found by the FDA were at levels one-thousandth that of cigarette smoke, and that while there is no certainty that these small traces are harmless, initial test results are reassuring.[20]
skybytch 273 #27 February 4, 2014 Yes, ecigs. It's not 2009 anymore. There are numerous options available now that were not available then. Tank atomizers are more popular than cartridges. Liquids are available that are made with only organic ingredients (vegetable glycerin, flavorings and nicotine). Is it healthy? Doubtful. Is it healthier than smoking cigarettes? Maybe, maybe not, jury is out. Can it help hardcore nicotine/cigarette addicts quit? Absofuckinglutely.
normiss 893 #28 February 4, 2014 Fair enough. I just see some friends change one addiction for another. Best of luck.
DougH 270 #29 February 4, 2014 Verdict isn't out be anecdotal evidence is good enough for me. They add over a 1,000 different chemicals to regular cigarettes plus the combustion by products. I have no doubt that water vapor, flavoring and bases that are proven safe food additives, and nicotine are magnitudes better than a regular cigarette. I haven't picked up a smoke since I started vaping. If I had the choose the best possible solution for me it would be to introduce nothing to my body, but I know that isn't really the workable solution. I often find myself going back to cigarettes when my stress is high. Having this instead is the best alternative for me. Healthy no, I am pretty confident it is healthier."The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
BigMikeH77 0 #30 February 4, 2014 Are you still smoke-free? How are you feeling about it? I started weaning myself down a week or so ago, using lozenges here and there, and now I'm only using lozenges. It's been three days now. I've been getting a lot of nicotine pings, and thats okay - they usually pass. This morning though, I felt like a bit of a two headed jerk monster
masterrig 1 #31 February 4, 2014 Just hang in there! My wife and I quit 17-yrs. ago... cold turkey. Hardest thing we ever did! We both still get little desires for a cigarette but they pass. I quit drinking at the same time. All in all, it was the hardest thing we had ever done. I had smoked for about 35-years and my wife had smoked about 20-yrs. You just have to be stronger than the cigarettes. Good luck to you!! Chuck

normiss 893 #34 February 5, 2014 Very true! It's really odd to be talking to someone at work and them puff on their e-cig.

normiss 893 #37 February 5, 2014 As my dad used to say: "Quitting is easy, I've done it lots of times." Yeah, he died from the complications of smoking related health issues.
wmw999 2,588 #38 February 5, 2014 My dad did it lots of times, too. Then he quit for the final time on the day his first grandchild was born. Said he didn't want the little guy to have a grandfather who smoked Wendy P. There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)
