My computer at work still runs on XP and I like it. I'm bummed about this upgrade and I hate that we are forced to spend that money on a new OS. [:/]

Welcome to the last Patch Tuesday where you can get security updates for Windows XP.

It was released on 25 October 2001. I had already been using it for over a year at that time.

Time to upgrade kiddies;)

XP had a good run but its days are over. B|

Yeah, I've been looking at options like that. There's just that darn learning curve, and I'm so lazy :D

Its actually not that bad. The biggest reason I didn't go full out with my computers all being Ubuntu is native application compatibility.

I have different versions of it on a laptop, my main server and a test VM and have built a couple NAS boxes for other people using the server version (command line interface only). Hell, my home DVR system is running Ubuntu.

What can I say, the price is right! ;)

The best part is, even some of the oldest machines can still run some version of it and the native compatibility almost never bites me in the ass. It's rare that I had to download a specific driver and even then, it was only one.

So my 8 year old has a computer running xp. How bad is this now I should I consider Ubuntu right away. He mainly just uses it for gaming but some school stuff and I also have some pics, video and movies stored on it. I also have it running Plex Media Server. I do not currently have a NAS

My biggest issue is MS Office. He uses PowerPoint although he did use Google slides for one extra credit presentation.

It is one thing to have to learn the OS but to have to learn all the new applications to replace Office might be a bit much? Any recommendations? This computer is used hours everyday but is an older machine. It has a core 2 duo cpu if that matters

i would recommend that you do not allow any box with xp to touch the internet at all. and everyone mentions ubuntu, but for really old systems, there are much better versions out there. puppy is one of my favorite small versions. it is built on slackware and has everything you need, best of all, it comes in a 156 mb download and burns to a cd. run it live for a while to get used to it, then you can install. i showed it to some clients, they were about 70, and they loved it straight from xp. you are also compatible with all of the office formats in the office-like suite, this is true for almost all versions.

i also use a custom built usb version when i have to venture onto the dark side of the net, great for being safe and they run from ram, no installation needed.

that's what these businesses are missing: they can upgrade to linux for free with existing hardware and save a ton of money to use for the few people who need the training. with the right distro, everything is close enough to xp to be second nature. i am actually working on a client/server system built on fedora to replace windows server for active directory and ms client/server systems.

I downloaded and burned and ISO image to try it out without installing. My laptop must need a new optical drive as after messing with several programs to burn I went to my kids PC for such a simple task. But upon booting form the disk I realized it was actually Xubuntu which I gather is a light version. I think his PC is plenty to run full scale versions? It runs XP great. Sounds like Puppy is really geared toward much lower spec gear.
I think I will just throw a different hard drive in and load one and let him go and load stuff up and then transfer everything over after if it seems to work good?

Well it looks like I am just going to back up important data and let him run it. For the online stuff he does it will be an issue. It appears as he can run Roblox with wine and also Minecraft will run but he likes to go to lots if places to play silly games and I just think this will be too much of a problem. I could upgrade to 7 but in reality I think I he will need a newer box. Too bad because that PC has been good to him. Fortunately I only paid $50 from a university sale for it.

if you can run wine for what you need with windows, find a distro of linux you like and switch. when your son has a computer on the network and the internet, someone will take control of it and turn it into a bot, and they may also gain access to any computers on the same network. my son is 11 and plays roblox also, and we reload it every month due to infections. and that's with a patched os and antivirus. puppy is a full os, it just loads quick and runs on anything. the best thing about choosing a linux distro is they are almost all free, and you can usually run them live to try out before installing. the new fedora is a little bit of a switch from xp, but suse is close. most of them are close enough that you can figure them out pretty easily.

and if you can upgrade the ram to at least 3 gb, it should be fast enough for win 7 home to play minecraft on. 2 gb won't do it, my son tried and it keeps glitching, so we got a laptop running for him. now, if you are concerned about paying for the license, i have heard of people who take pictures of a license key from computers in places like pawn shops to use them on other computers. it's illegal, though, so you shouldn't do it.

I love watching the machinations that people will go thru to not have to put a MS OS on a system:ph34r::ph34r:

Cookin up another batch of popcorn;)

Some people would be able to afford popcorn if they didn't buy the latest MS OS. :P

For the record I am by no mean anti MS. I just hate to spend $100 on a $50 PC, plus a stick of ram and hope not to lose performance. I really do like windows 7 if it will run decent on the machine. And I suspect it will as my Laptop in not that much higher specs except 6 GB ram.

And how much did they charge for Windows 8???? I saw I all kinds of deals on it.. and then...... upgrade to 8.1 was free. It works great on my old Lappie with only the 4 GB it came with 5 years ago. I put it on.. and gave it to a friend who is retired and cant afford squat.

I know, I am running 8.1 Pro on this laptop, 7 Ultimate on my other and have a couple VM's running 7 and XP.

What I would like to see is MS take up the route that Apple was doing, you pay for one license and you can upgrade (I think it was 5 machines) your household with the one purchase.

If I could've upgraded all of my machines to 8/8.1 for the cost of one license, I would've! It's just cost prohibitive to upgrade 2-3 machines having to shell out $100-200 per machine.

That's the exact reason I put Ubuntu on PC's that I build for people to become servers. It's cost prohibitive to put Server 2012 on home NAS systems.

I am not against MS, I just wish it wasn't so f-n expensive to keep several devices up to date.
