The111 1 #1 October 21, 2004 I recently jumped without a helmet for the st time on a 2-way wingsuit jump. I enjoyed it (I still can't get over how CRISP my canopy sounded when it opened!!!) and did a few more solos like that. But I missed having my audibles. I've seen pictures of people attaching their audible(s) to their goggle strap. My worry would be that I'd somehow lose the goggles (through riser strike or something else I haven't thought of), and an expensive Dytter (or 2) along with them. So then I thought of somehow attaching a lanyard to the goggles, and oh, say my neck. But then I got all these mental images of strangulation and that sucked. So the question is - is there any safe way to ensure you cannot lose goggles on a helmetless jump? With the helmet on, the goggles are pretty much guaranteed to stay there (unless of course you lose the helmet too). Without the helmet, it's a different story...www.WingsuitPhotos.com

councilman24 37 #5 October 21, 2004 Shave your head! I don't think there is a serious answer to your question. Either you trust L&B's goggles strap, make your own, or go without. Or, wear a protec with open ear holes. I'm always surprised by the extra noise when I take off my frap hat and put on my protec. I made a small spandex pouch with velcro to wrap around the padding over the ear.I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
The111 1 #6 October 21, 2004 Which L&B product are you talking about? I can't find anything about it anywhere. Maybe I'm misunderstanding you guys, but you realize I'm talking about securing the goggles to my head, NOT the dytters to the goggles? Oh well, I didn't really expect a good answer to this question anyway, thanks for the replies though. www.WingsuitPhotos.com

Yup, and if you're really worried about it, tack a small loop to the top of the collar of your jumpsuit. Then connect the goggle strap to it with a long rubber-band or something else that will hold on against the wind, but will still break if it needs to...Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™
bodypilot1 0 #9 October 22, 2004 I have thousands of jumps without a helmet on and not one riser strike to my head. I wouldn't stress the issue, but I can tell you it will strongly effect your hearing in time.....huh, you say something? The only time I wear a helmet with an audible is on AFF jumps for the unpredictable student, or when I was doing competition. Thought I'm rebelious for people saying you MUST wear a helmet when you jump, it is probably safer, but I'd probably fight to my death to make it a freedom of choice! Kris 0 #10 October 22, 2004 Well put, Ed. I'm pretty much the same way about helmets....to each their own. But, I had a really hard opening last year that shredded one of the cells of my Stiletto, popped a couple of lines, and wrenched my knee and hip. But the fun didn't stop there....I whipped up into those violently-deploying risers with such force that it burned and lacerated my face in spots, and melted a gouge in the frame and left lens of the Oakley sunglasses I was wearing. There were some decent scrapes on the side of my Bonehead as well. I have no doubt that had I not had it on we would have been looking for my ear along with my main & freebag. I'm pretty religious about wearing my helmet now, but still leave it off (although rarely) for the occasional hop & pop.Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™
Lindsey 0 #11 October 22, 2004 How about putting on some goggles, ditching the dytter, and enjoying your skydive! Peace! linz-- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail
SkymonkeyONE 4 #12 October 22, 2004 One reason for audibles is that is you wear you alti (or Neptune) on your wrist and you are jumping a SkyFlyer 3 or another wingsuit with wingtip stiffners installed then you have a real hard time seeing it. I don't look at my alti at all until very late in the skydive because of the way I fly holding my wingtips. If I had my alti/neptune in a more visible location I would not concern myself too much with my audible. Mudflap mounts work really nice, but the one I have won't fit on my Wings containers. riggerrob 643 #13 October 22, 2004 Laresn & Brusgard used to sell an extra strap that allowed jumpers to mount their Dytters on Kroop goggles. I never saw the logic to that as jumping without a helmet is TOO F*#**ING LOUD.
SkymonkeyONE 4 #14 October 22, 2004 I actually have one of those Dytter mounts for goggles, but never got around to using it. They have them, and the ever-popular "foot mount", on sale at SkyCAT.
The111 1 #15 November 2, 2004 Note to all the people who thought I was worrying too much... I've done about 10 jumps with no helmet now, and already came VERY close to losing my goggles on a 180 off heading opening as the risers scraped the side of my face/head. I did not have dytters on them, so it would have been no big loss, but they got pulled all the way up to the top of my head and somehow magically stayed on just slightly long enough for me to grab them. :) So it can happen, easily apparently...www.WingsuitPhotos.com
bbarnhouse 0 #16 November 2, 2004 I've made hundreds of jumps with dytters attached to my goggles. Yeah I rigged it up and it worked perfectly fine. I've never had an issue with the goggles coming loose, then again I've never had a really hard riser strike. I will add that I did this when close to competition time and while training with a camera flyer. Partly because its more aesthetically pleasing for the judges in the discipline of freestyle skydiving. Any other scenario... I wear a helmet. I choose to wear my helmet more often now even while training...the ground...its just damn hard.
