Oakland CA opens Cat Town Cat Cafe (1st in US)

Recommended Posts

No, they don't serve "cat." I'd put that in Billy's Sick & Twisted thread. :P

It's a thing that's big in Japan, where you can go to a cafe, have a cup of coffee, and pet & cuddle with a cat.

This is similar, but is a part of the Cat Town cat rescue mission.

The profits go towards the animal shelter, and the overall idea is to get these cats into permanent homes.

They opened for the first time yesterday. Lots of positive publicity, including Wall St Journal, Good Morning America & Time Online

Full disclaimer: My sister is deeply involved with this. She has worked very hard for a very long time to help this group (not just the cafe).

I think it's a great idea, not against them at all, however (and there's ALWAYS a however), if somebody with cat allergies put up a stink (with a lawyer), how would the cafe defend itself in an ADA lawsuit?

There's a separate "Cafe" part. There has to be for health code reasons.

The people, dishes & utensils, even the air can't go directly from the "cat" part to the "food" part. Dishes have to be washed before they can go back.

People buy their food & coffee at the "cafe" part. They can then take it to the "cat" part to consume it, but don't have to.

Another article that covers more of the practical stuff:
