Question to Sailors, specifically about sailboats moored next to Honolulu Airport

Recommended Posts

If you look at the marina here: 21.318021, -157.894009 all the sailboats have their booms secured portside. Why? For the easy/question answer, you wouldn't leave your sheets slack, it's not the wind, and there's no reason to try to get your sailboat to list. Additionally, it's 100% of the booms that are to port.

I'm nearly certain you are not seeing what you believe you're seeing.

The important thing to realize when looking at satellite photos sometimes they aren't taken from directly over the surface, but instead at a slight oblique angle. What I believe you're seeing are not the booms, but the masts.

Just so we're on the same page, take a look at some of the telephone poles on shore. Look at the shadows being cast northward and the illusion of the poles pointing eastward.
