Zenister 0 #4 September 25, 2004 Dune. QuoteI must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

Luna 0 #8 September 25, 2004 Probably the classic is Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway by Dr. Susan Jeffers. Depends on how in depth you want to go and what you want to learn, really. Any of the books about Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) will address fear in addition to many other emotions, and are a great resource. PM me if you ever want to talk about it. The111 1 #9 September 26, 2004 I tried so hard to read Dune. I was on a sci-fi kick having just finished Ender's Game and Time Enough For Love (both based on recommendations in this forum). But I simply could not get very far, I got bogged down by all the foreign "words" and names and political structures... www.WingsuitPhotos.com
Zenister 0 #10 September 26, 2004 thats is a big part of the immersion in the world and culture... there are some good websites that can help if reading a 'glossary' makes it easier for you... it's quite probablly one of the most influential and literary science fiction works ever... In depth of meaning, character and plot development, i'd rank Herbert higher than Tolkien no matter how many flaming arrows get shot at me because... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. christoofar 0 #11 September 26, 2004 Quotecan anyone recommend any good books about fear? The Da Vinci Code wasn't about fear (it's murder mustery) but it was a helluva read. grlsgotalot2lrn 0 #12 September 26, 2004 i meant more like non-fiction books about fear, but scary stories rock too. and i love seeing how this thread as evolved. The Edge by Hunter S. Thompson seemed like a good recommendation.

vibeke 0 #15 September 26, 2004 grlsgotalot2lrn Im not sure what your looking for, but if you where searching for a book on dealing with fear and other selfimposed limitations I can recommend a book Im reading right now. It directs the mental teqnique / concept Inner Game. The book itself is directed at Skiing. But nevertheless the issues are exactly the same! And I know the guy actually went on and wrote a book on Skydiving later, but this book presents the Inner Game and fear issue better. Its called INNER SKIING By W. Timothy Gallwey & Robert Kriegel Its the revised edition, published by Random House, New York _______________________________________________________________________________ Your success and happiness, is in direct proportions to your commitment to excellence, regardless of your chosen field of endeavour. freeflynick 0 #16 October 4, 2004 House of Leaves........the most incredibly ingenious book I have ever ready - and pretty scary too. Its just awesome! Hobbes: "How come we play 'War' and not 'Peace'?" Calvin: "Too few role models."
tigra 0 #17 October 4, 2004 Its not exactly about fear, but I read a book called Learning to Fly which was written by a man who took up trapeze flying late in life- in his 60s? I think. Very inciteful and well written! In the book SeaBiscuit, there's also a section that talks about how dangerous it was (and still is) to be a jockey and the way the jockeys handled their fear and dealt with accidents. Very interesting, and I found myself relating some of it to skydiving.

The book details her transition from professional climbing bum to skydiving, to BASE jumping to wing-suiting off of a variety of cliffs, bridges, etc. Steph published LtoF in 2013 and also gave a TED talk on the same subject.
