BillyVance 35 #2 January 7, 2015 Awesome. I visited the hotel back in October 2010. You could see it from a mile or two away. Just majestic. MikeJD 0 #3 January 7, 2015 So, The Shining "... was itself inspired by author Stephen King’s experience at The Stanley Hotel". What experience was that? Was he sent slowly round the twist? Menaced by apparitions of dead girls and a decomposing woman? Chased by a madman with an axe? Lucky there's no such thing as bad publicity!

I believe he requested and got one of the rooms that was supposedly haunted. A well-known actor/comedian, Jim Carrey, stayed in the same room one night while making the Dumb and Dumber movie, and reportedly refused to stay another night, so who knows? There's been documentation of paranormal activity in a former motel building now used as storage on the hotel grounds and it is absolutely off-limits to tourists and guests.
