You don't want fries with that

I wonder about this phenomenon quite often. Is it that people on the lower end of society feel so unempowered and down trodden that any chance to feel in power and in control is just too heady for them?

My observations with pedestrians in crosswalks is that middle aged, well off guys like me tend to walk quickly, appreciating that cars are stopped for me and I want to delay them as little as possible. A cooperative society, right? With the down and out, possibly homeless, I see them walking almost a slowly as possible in the cross walk, finally having some power over all the people who can afford cars and forcing them to acknowledge their presence. So is it a hunger for power and control by those who rarely have it?

Or has their life really given them no tools for coping civilly with the small aggravations? Did they never have role models that could teach them peaceful resolutions to conflicts?

Or, worst of all, are their egos so inflated that they feel they're allowed to scream and yell at all around? Do they feel so entitled that rudeness is just one more "uncivil" right?

I'm not a sociologist. Just spent too much time at crosswalks. :D

I think we need to start by looking at their culture and what is deemed acceptable.

I think it's the matter of mindset only. For instance, trade place with those and nothing will change. You'll still walk faster, trying not to delay a driver, even waving 'thanks'.
Those will show you a finger while yelling "Hurry up asshole!"
Most people are just plain stupid.

Neither. They're drunk.

Is that the homeless culture? :)
The most clueless walkers around here seem to be the ones downtown.

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

"A irate Black woman" .....

In journalism class, that'd be an F for content, over an F for mechanics.

But wait! Not to be outdone by:

"The McDonalds is located in Ypsilanti, Michigan, which was described by one commenter as 'half college town half ghetto trash town.' "

Yes, of course. In other words, the author made up the quote.

I guess we're discussing the intersection of sociology and behavioral psychology in this thread. For example, how low class people and antisocial behavior often intersect. And, in that scholarly vein, it never ceases to amaze me how often poor literacy skills and an author's personal racism intersect. So it goes.

No, I was referring to the set of people that have the mindset that they are better than everyone else.
