Reserve Repack

Recommended Posts

I did a search on this and all I came up with was reserve cycles. Anyway just curious as to what a Rigger does during the repack. Does he inspect the canopy, lines, containers as to air worthyness? Does the repack differ if the reserve has been deployed? Excuse the newbie question but just curious.

Just do your EPs right there, throw out (or pullout), cutaway and reserve. This will give you a little feel on how hard the peel/pull is (for a total, that is) and you will see whether your reserve PCs' spring is flying off your back or not (it better be).

I always find i learn something new whenever i watch a rigger do the inspection/repack. I was also very curious on the first repack of my new gear this spring as to the "peel-feel" and handling of my reserve pillow. Having popped it twice for repacks now, i have no doubt i can pop it whenever i should need to.

We inspect everything on a harness-container system. Stitching, hardware, webbing, bar-tacks, risers, lines, parachute (inside and out), free-bag, bridle, pilot-chute, rip-cord, release handle... every square inch. Inside and out... everything. Places you couldn't imagine. Also, checking for Airworthy Directives, Service Bulletins, applicable pull-tests and any up-dates to packing instructions. Inspection and packing of the reserve is the same, whether or not it is jumped... according to manufacturer's instructions. Hope, this helps.

I always invite my customers to watch the I & R. But I tell them they get a better job if they don't because I won't be distracted.;) One customer (and girl friend at the time) immediately replied "I'll just watch you pack someone elses."B|

While I want my customers to pull their reserve, please wait and do it with you rigger. We want to check the pull, watch the launch, and not have you damage the reserve trying to get it to us open.

Do I have to take my rigger on every skydive that I may have a malfunction on?:P

hahaha

Oh...you mean on the ground when it is due for a inspection/repack?

I really like the skydivers that deploy their reserve in the landing area after the last jump of the day and then drag everything in, tangled up, throw it in their gear bag, tangling it more and throw it in my loft with $45 expecting to not pay anymore...no joke, it's happened.>:(

I love rigging.

Several years ago I did watch a deployment of one of my pack jobs from under canopy about 200' away. Looked pretty good.B| I asked Bob what he was thinking. He said he thought "Ok Terry, here we go." I told him he should be talking to someone else at that time.:)

Terry, I remember laying on the landing area watching a friend jump a rig that I had just recertified a couple of days previously. The main malfunctioned (badly - brake line step through), she did her emergency procedures perfectly but DAMN - from the ground - that looked like a slow opening. The lines seemed like they were a mile long, the opening looked like a slo-mo movie and internally I'm screaming "C'mon!" It was a picture perfect opening, but from down here, damnnnn. I'm not watching any more of 'em

The first and only time I have seen one of my re-pack jobs open I was wearing the rig.

Same with me. It was like my 18th reserve packjob, i didn't even have my ticket yet...had packed it under supervision. But hey, i found out i knew what i was doing. No better feeling than saving your own butt. :)

I had my first save a few weeks ago: me. Second skydiving reserve pack job. Cutaway, flipped over, relaxed, and dumped without any stress. Opened on-heading like 16/17 my previous slider equipped single canopy packjobs a thousand feet above the highest of those.

Had my 15th save two weeks ago with a first jump student. (she got freaked out by endcell closure)
Camera guy videod the whole thing and I got to see one of my reserve packs open!

There's definately a satisfaction in watching it.

If one of my repacks doesn't open, I hope I'm wearing it! That way I can take out the jerk who packed it!:P
