I think that may have been an ancient paraglider. The risers did not look like normal skydiving kit. In the earliest days of paragliding, the canopies were more like parachutes than gliders.

The final scene where he was way out to the side is what is known as a "lockout." He probably had no control input at that point. That's a good way to die on dry land.

I disagree. At 0:50 I can see thru the canopy to the PC attachment reinforcing on top.
