Quite the chart. Sucks to see suicide so high. . . [:/]

I know.... :(

Anecdotally I have known way too many that opted out in that way. I wonder how many were Vietnam Vets... Those who died over there but did not realize it till many years later.[:/]

It always seems harder for those of us who knew them in better times after they make that decision. It is particularly hard for those of us who find their lifeless remains >:(

If there were two charts by gender you would see interesting differences.

Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

But suicide rates among Vietnam veterans are the highest of any particular group, according to John Draper, project director of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

Not just Vietnam vets... there's been a lot of suicides among Afghanistan and Iraq war vets. When I was watching the college football awards show last December, one player who was a US Marine in Afghanistan then came back home and enrolled in a small college to play football, then won an award for his work, well, he mentioned during his acceptance speech that a Marine killed himself just the night before. Just kind of puts things in perspective. [:/]

So not to rub penis heads about a delicate subject.... Right now, Vietnam Vets are in the highest percentile while OIF/OEF vets are in the lower percentile. Having said that; many are recognizing that Vietnam Vets came back; became workaholics to deal with their PTSD and are now empty-nesters and losing war buddies to graves.

To your point; this fucking war was fought the same as Vietnam and the concern is for these veterans and what will happen 25-30 years from now. Personally, I'm at a point where I don't think our leadership understands the true cost of war when they embark on a full S|S|T|R campaign (Secure, Stabilize, Transition, Restructure) and then pull out in the middle of the stabilization phase.

IMO: We need to do one of two things:

1. Go in with a full and complete operations plan that include an increase in ground forces while going through Stabilization & Transition and through each phase including the exit plan.

2. Forget about T|R - just go in and make war what it is - complete devastation with bombing for days, followed by ground forces taking the country over. Then, a formal surrender followed by letting them T|R on their own and put the money for these two phases into the VA. I realize this is a antiquated approach, but God bless it worked.

More to your point... as of this date; we have lost more young veterans to suicide than have been lost in ODS | OIF | OEF. Same exact trend as Vietnam.

MEGA like...on that.

I have watched too many of my generation pass away... some ran away into the woods and came out years later a bit more reflective... the ones who survived their isolation. Others just turned into total wankers.. drugs.. alcoholics and some of those started dying early on in the 80's. Then there were those like some of the guys I worked with who survived the war but did not survive wasting away from Agent Orange, aircrew who had flown Ranchhand. there have been a LOT of vets who just rotted away from the inside from that crap.
