How to Calculate "Years in Sport"

Recommended Posts

Yes, I'm bored.

So I had my first jump course on August 14, 2004. I joined dropzone.com in September 2004 and filled out my profile. Since I couldn't put "0" for years in sport, I chose "1."

Now that I've passed that skybirthday, I actually do have 1 year in the sport. But it seems like now I should update it to 2 as I'm in my second year in the sport.

What's the right thing to do?

Math is hard! Let's go to the mall!

Wow, I think you need to drink a beer.

I started back in 2001 and started AFF in 2002 and then made 1 jump in 2003 and took the whole year of 2004 off and then came back full force this year. So um yeah... when you guys figure out the answer to her question, please let me know if I've been in the sport for 4 years, 3 years or 5 years (August 18, 2001 is my sky b-day)

Fear not, I'm leaving for a baseball game soon. I hear tell there's beer there (and the way the Mariners are playing this year, it's the only way to get through a game!). I'm just killing time till my friend picks me up!

Yeah, I wasn't even getting into more complex situations like yours where the early jumps were few and far between or others where there were long layoffs!

I've gone back and forth on mine from 3-2 years for that very same reason!

June 14th was my 2nd skydiving anniversary, so I'm keeping '2 years' in my profile. I'll change it to 3 years in '06. ;)

But I hope I can actually post my jump numbers by then...:S

Okay, it's a date then. Bummer because I prolly won't run into you again until LP next year. McGregeor Lake?

You're on. But I find it hard to believe it'll be that long. Surely I'll run into you at some boogie or other before then... if not, we've got a mud-wrestling date at the Lake! Orrrrrrr... maybe we could get Lang to create a beer/mud pond for us at the brewery!

I voted for "Update to 2 years after you start your second year". For the reason that everyone starts with 1 year in the sport and your USPA card should say 2nd year of membership after you have to renew. Distinguish your experience from the people who have 1 day in the sport. Celebrate your sky b-day with an update to your profile.

Added: Another complication is after a long break from jumping. I made one AFF jump back in 1998 and then didn't make my second jump until June 2004. Years in sport should only include time where you stay current.

Use the wording - "In sport." If you made a jump today then this is your first year in the sport. On your skybirthday, you will be starting your second year in the sport. Its also a nifty trick for job interviews. If you worked a job for 2 (full) years and 1 day, then you can legitly say "I was in my third year of employment."

So by all means have at it, you have been in the sport 2 years now. Congrats.

If your 1st jump was your birthday - how old would you be?

1, right?

There's your answer.

umm no you'd be one DAY old, you need to complete 365 days to have one year of anything:|
You are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky)

How's yours doing?

:D

Read my answer in context to the question asked by the person I responded to and the information he gave. If you disagree - you're probably one of those who celebrated the new millenium at the end of 1999.

The 2000m final at the Olympics ends at the end of the 2000th meter, not when the 1st person crosses 1999 into 2000.

Although I am in my 44th year, I am 43 years old.

Although I have been jumping for 20 years, 210 days, I still list 20 years in the sport, and not 21 - at least not until I have done 20 years and 365 days.

If you work for a place for a week - the tax man doesn't charge you for a year even though you worked that week in 2004.

If you went to Fiji for your year end holiday and arrived on Christmas day and left on Jan 03 - you never spent 2 years there, and if you tell people you did, you're a bullshitter.

You've been in the sport for a year when you complete 365 days. You stay at 1 year until you get to 730 days - unless it's a leap year in which case it's 731 days. Then you go to 2 years.

But I know you know this. I just said it so you know I know it too.;)

Damnit, now I'm going to have to post in "Suggestions and Feedback."

Dear Sangiro:

Please change the "years in sport" to "days in sport." Not knowing precisely how many days someone has been in skydiving is causing me great angst and making it difficult for me to tell legitimate skygods from mere posers.

Humbly yours,

NW Flyer

I have to agree with T on this one: floor(years_in_sport);

You should probably be allowed to put "<1", or something along those lines, but clearly we proved to HH we're not responsible enough for that kind of freedom.

(Actually, HH could make it so that if you don't enter anything, the default shows up as "<1" ... just a thought.)

In the meantime, round down. It'll make your jumps/year look higher ;)

i tried to explain this very thing to a history teacher of mine several years ago by informing her that the reason is because there was no year zero. it was like trying to teach a dog to read. B|:D

THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT i SAID IN ONE SENTENCE:D:D:D:D
You're just verbose:P
and NO I had untold discussions with people at the turn of 2000, most of them believing they were entering a new millennium:S:S:S

You have one year in the sport. You weren't wrong entering "1" when that was your only choice - it was correct (first year = year one).

I have a similar dilemma. My first jump from an airplane was 3 August 1984, a military static line jump at Ft. Benning, GA. I didn't make a sport jump until March of 1985.

Compared to the rest of my peers here in the forums, who doubtless consider their first jump from a plane as their start date, I choose the August 1984 date.

I don't count my military static line jumps as sport skydives, but I use the date. It's a tangled web . . . :S

I haven't seen anyone disagree with this so that is what I'm going with.

As for the current go-around...Hmmmm, I put 1 the day I came back and I'll change it to 2 when I complete my 2nd year back. Correct me if I'm wrong here but what I'm seeing as the consensus is that I should have changed to 2 when my first anniversary back came around.

Whaddaya tink?

???????????too much thinking...i'm going for a beer.
My reality and yours are quite different.

As you can see, I didn't change mine after my first anniversary in August. I also stopped worrying about it. Though now that I think about it, USPA says I have two years, I think.
