I wanted to make sure I didn't startle the snake and have it jump at me. :P

2 days ago on the US36 bike path I encountered a 4' bull snake stretched out across the path. I tried to shoo him off the path, but he just ignored me. So I reached down a gave him a poke. Holy shit, he got mad!:o He coiled up in a flash, hissing like hell. Which was kind of funny considering his small size.:D

Why you do gently to this?

Me whack, whack, whack!!!!!!!! Hoe make good whacker.

Because KARMA, that's why. Killing animals out of fear and being uneducated is WRONG. The animal wants nothing to do with you, it wants and has just as much right to live as you and I. Soooooo, just leave snakes alone and if they do happen into your house or property find someone with a conscious to relocate it.

PEACE out.

I concur. They are devastating an already delicate balance.

Agreed. Non-invasive species, leave them alone or relocate if they are a danger to your kids or pets.

Non-native invasive species, treat with extreme prejudice, ESPECIALLY the pythons in the Everglades. Blame the assholes who bought them as babies then dumped them in the swamps when they got too big. Then they start breeding and laying eggs. They're out of control.

Wild boars/pigs are equally as destructive. They don't belong in the US.

Hey Timski –

Remember pythons are an invasive species and they are wreaking havoc on the Everglades.

Whack away on them.

Big difference between an invasive, destructive species (like the pythons in the Everglades) and something that is part of the ecosystem (like the one Billy didn't kill).

Killing out of fear or hatred, whether it's an individual animal or an entire species is stupid.

It’s also a little personal with me.

An 8-ft boa was captured 5 feet from my garage right next to where my kids play. My daughters were 3 & 5 at the time. Perfect snack size. The snake was a lost pet named Pedro. He had been lost for two weeks and was three blocks from his keeper’s house. I was out of town when it happened otherwise...whack ‘em.

Hopefully the “pet” in the article below is captured soon.

Well first off, pythons & boas are invasive species. They don't belong. Removing them is a good idea.

Second, I highly doubt that an 8 foot snake could eat a kid, even as small as a 3 year old.
Stories are out there about snakes killing kids, but the snakes are a lot bigger (15 foot or more).

The link in the story is about a cobra. Also a non-native species.

This post is filled with hubris, and ignorance. You assume a lot.

In my neck of the woods, there are snakes that will gladly poison you or yours, and those who will bite (attack aggressively) the crap out of those same beloveds.

So, if I see them, I will grab up the nearest whacker, and I will let God determine if I was wrong.

Really? What kind of snake?

Very few snakes are actively aggressive.

However, if you startle them, you may find yourself on the end of an attack.
Given your willingness to kill them for no reason ("if I see them I kill them"), I can understand.

Most snakes, venomous or not, just want to be left alone. But yep, startle them if you get too close, they will defend themselves. However, the only one that really scare me is the cottonmouth (water moccasin). At the same house next to my work where I recently fished out the copper head, a coworker and I went over there last year to catch and kill a full grown water moccasin that had encamped itself in the corner of the steps to the front door. The lady that lived there asked us for help, and boy was it aggressive.

Aggressive? Or simply defensive?

You went in there to kick it out of it's "home" and kill it.

Again, I can understand it's behavior.

Kinda funny. When I was a little kid, I was taught that honeybees are not aggressive (wasps are different). And instead of panicking and flailing around, I should just stand still. Never got stung.

In general, the same thing works for snakes. (yes, there are exceptions).

What's the difference, when it comes to Kill or bee killed? ;)

Yes, most snakes will not be a problem if left alone. They will slither away if they can, but if I uncover a nest of copperheads while moving the trash cans, they generally will lash out and so will I. Or if I disturb a Black snake 6-7footer while picking blackberries, it's likely to chase me back up the hill, so don't tell me that the internet hype about snake aggressiveness is BS. I've seen it first hand, and I've also had a cat bitten by a rattler. She survived and cost a fortune.

Unfortunately, most snakes people encounter are of the "too close to me and now we are both in survival mode" kind so:

Wack, Wack, Wack!

You would probably have conniptions for how I treat mice. ;)

I can only imagine what your reaction would be if you were the woman in that story. :o

But hey don't worry, I hope it never happens. :)

There was a large herpetarium there in Homestead when I was stationed at Homestead AFB in the mid 1970's. It was destroyed in Hurricane Andrew and released a lot of really nasty critters that they used to milk venom from to make antivenin. I worry less about running across a Python than I do a cobra or a Fer De Lance.

The upside if you find a python...... snakes are yummy... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtSS_aR09B4
