Fab 0 #1 August 25, 2004 Hello, I'm going to buy a new container soon but am not sure as to order it with or without a narrow chest strap (1 inch). What are the advantages or disadvantages (if there are any)? Or is it just a matter of looks? Some info would be appreciated...Thanks _______________________________________
masterrig 1 #2 August 25, 2004 I think, it's just a matter of what you want. Personally, I think, the 'wider' chest straps are more comfortable. Some folks think the 1"-chest straps are more comfortable or 'cooler'. If you can, try-on a rig with a 1"-chest strap and see what you think. Maybe, jump it. A lot of folks can tell you what you 'need' but, the best way is, try it for yourself. You be the judge. You're the one spending the money. You're the one who needs to be happy with your decision. Tonto 1 #3 August 25, 2004 I had a narrow (1 inch) on my last rig. My new rig came with wide (?) and I way prefer it. Even thinks like hook knives stay where you put them. Just my opinion. tIt's the year of the Pig.
vt1977 0 #4 August 25, 2004 I had a wide chest strap on my last rig and was adamant that I wanted the same on my new one. I was dubious, but was talked into having a 1” chest strap by the gear dealer and it was an excellent decision – I love it. If you plan to put a knife or altimeter on your chest strap, I guess a wide chest strap may be preferable, but personally my knife is kept on my legstrap and my alti on my wrist, so this isn't an issue for me. Personal preference though! Vicki
riggerrob 643 #5 August 25, 2004 masterrig is correct when he says that the choice between wide or narrow chest straps is largely (ooops about the pun) a fashion statement. I would ask whether the chest strap is single or double layer. Al of the current materials are way stronger than the loads you will ever put on a chest strap, however, some of them slip. For example, my Talon 2 originally came with a wide (Type 8 webbing) chest strap, but it has an annoying habit of slipping through the buckle - when not loaded (i.e. while sitting of Type 8 to "bulk out" the buckle.. DShiznit 0 #6 August 25, 2004 I have a narrow chest strap. If/when I order a new rig, it will have the wide. You cannot mount an alti or carry a hook knife on the narrow, it moves around WAY too much.
Fab 0 #7 August 25, 2004 thanks for all the input/infoI think I'll go with the narrow chest strap. I have rented a few rigs with narrow straps and liked them. I won't be putting a hook knive or alti on it. Thanks again.... _______________________________________
DrewEckhardt 0 #8 August 25, 2004 Narrow assuming it's sewn so it can't unthread all the way No difference in comfort and it's easier to loosen under canopy. Chest mount altimeters work fine if you mount them at the edge instead of the middle.

It can be sewn a little lower to stop that upleasant habit of riding up on opening. Otherwise, it's just a matter of taste. I used one for about 1000 jumps, then went back to the larger type. It's more comforatble, I can mount an altimeter on it for AFF and large ways, and it's easier for people to grab on launches.
FrogNog 1 #10 August 26, 2004 QuoteNarrow assuming it's sewn so it can't unthread all the way I think I have only ever seen one chest strap that was sewn so the end couldn't easily be unthreaded through the hardware (unloaded, using two hands) - Amazon had one of these for her "Special Needs." One thing that's important to me is ability to unthread the chest strap for a water landing. The narrow chest strap on one rig I rented was so fuzzed and the stopper so tight in the hardware that there was no way I could get it undone in the air unless I pulled at 10k. I don't know if this was related to it being a narrow strap but if so, I would prefer a wide strap like I have on my rig.
