JonBonGraham 0 #1 August 24, 2004 Hey - I'm looking at buying my first set of kit and have spotted one that I think is a good deal, but I live in the UK and the kit's in Canada! Was just wondering what the general consensus is about buying second hand gear - does the seller ship to a DZ and get the money when the buyer is happy, or does the buyer pay and the seller ship once the cheque clears, or somewhere in-between? Most people have told me not to part with any money untill I have the kit in my lap, fully inspected and tested and such, but was wondering what you guys in the US and Canada, as well as other countries, think about this. Thanks, would appreciate any advice! Durham University Freefall Club Grounds For Divorce website (band I'm in)

CornishChris 5 #3 August 24, 2004 There should be some decent 2nd hand gear in the UK too. Coming towards the end of your seasoncheck with some of the stockists (see BPA Mag) and see if they have any demo gear for sale, often only done 50-100 odd jumps but they sell for a good rate. Also check at the DZ and in the Mags, less risk than overseas if there is a problem. CJP Gods don't kill people. People with Gods kill people
goose491 0 #4 August 25, 2004 Yeah the summers almost out so you'll see a lot of gear for sale locally soon. Having said that, I know what it's like to "have to have that one" so... Buy a money order or certified check and then send it once the seller provides you a shipping tracking number or something to that effect. When I bought my main canopy from a guy in the states. I actually scanned the money order and emailed the voided copy to him, he then shipped the canopy and emailed me the tracking number. Then I sent my money on it's way. Oh yeah, you may want to ask him to wrap it in gift paper and throw in a birthday card or something Nick My Karma ran over my Dogma!!!
riggerrob 643 #5 August 25, 2004 It is standard procedure to ask a DZ or respected loft to act as a middle man in used gear transactions. Basically the check (or money order) is held until the gear passes inspection. By the same token, the gear does not leave the loft until the check has cleared. When I worked at Square One, I inspected up to a dozen used rigs per week. I filled out detailed inspection sheets, including mandatory repairs and recommended repairs. I was often asked if I thought the seller was asking a reasonable price. Often I test-fitted the used harness on the buyer late in the process. I also told a few sellers that their faded, frayed and filthy canopies would be better used to line bird cages! Hee! Hee! Which reminds me, I have to finish patching that used PD-230 before the weekend. Bye!
adamUK 3 #6 August 25, 2004 Jon, so you are fed up of jumping my rig already then? Have a chat with Wayne about his exploits with the canopy he bought from some dude in Canada... http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1204729;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread I think you need to be really careful how you broker this deal... so he only gets the money when the goods are shipped. Or go to Canada. Or ask Wayne to go to Canada to pick it up for you. Just be careful! Not everyone's kosher. By the way, you still owe me a fiver
JonBonGraham 0 #7 August 25, 2004 Ah! But being the cheekey manifest staff member that I am, I have (already!!) put a fiver in your account, and it was done all without you knowing about it! I was planning on sneaking random ammounts of money into your account, but I guess I'll have to put a stop to that. Anyone else? Oh yeah, and your rig was really REALLY nice to jump (it was the first time i've jumped a nice new spangly free-fly friendly container with a nice new RESPONSIVE AND GOOD canopy in it so was a treat!) but the rig is just too... yours! It'd be far too cheekey to jump it on a regular basis! Thanks for letting me though, I'll buy you a beer next time I bust you down the bar!
