hottamaly 1 #1 August 10, 2004 I have some gear listed in the classifieds and was surprised to get a responce within the first day it was posted. The offer that was made on it is sure one of those scams, as he asked to send money that was 5 times the value of the merchandise. He wants me to take out my asking price and give him back the change. I have read on these forums about people like this that give you a bogus check and then they get the money (change) from you and the gear. Watch out folks, don't get ripped off trying to sell your gear. EdC 0 #3 August 10, 2004 That also happened to a friend of mine who was trying to sell a car on-line. He submitted the listing and some guy from Qatar made an offer 5k over the price and said he would wire the funds and arrange for shipping the car over seas if we could just wire the 5k back to him. He said it was some customs thing with the value being over a certain amount, blah blah blah. Yeah it was bogus, but you have to be careful. mr2mk1g 10 #6 August 10, 2004 I had exactly the same thing happen to me a while back when selling a DV camera on E-bay. Guy asked the typical scam - exactly the textbook scenario. I kept him talking on email for a day or two, searched for all the auctions he was hosting or bidding on and contacted every seller of items he was bidding on, every buyer in the bidder history on all of his items and told them he was a con artist. KCJumper 0 #7 August 11, 2004 Just so you know i have been through this scam. What they want is for you to cash the check and send them their money that would be left over from the purchase. They don't want your gear. Just the money. By the time the check comes back you are out the money you sent. I have a counterfit check from my transaction. Luckily it looked so fake i laughed at the guy. He was from Aftrica telling me he had a client who would send me the money. mikecm469 1 #8 August 12, 2004 This happened to a friend of mine trying to sell a bedroom suit. He was notified it might be a scam by Western Union after he tried to send to money back to the person.
