Jason_Adamo 0 #1 August 5, 2004 Hello i was just wondering what the average life is for gear like the rig, main, and reserve. Thanks
RyanofOZ 0 #2 August 5, 2004 You will get a lot of different answrers here on that. It depends widely on its use and maintainance. A busy DZ can wear out a student rig in a few years where as a personal sport rig may be jumpable for 20 or more. It all depends on how it is cared for and how much its used. Most of the time people upgrade to take advantage of better designs before their old ones wear out. Usually though, you can count on it being good for thousands of jumps if cared for.Oz

nacmacfeegle 0 #4 August 6, 2004 A lot will also depend upon the environment in which the gear is used, eg a rig that is jumped in a desert environment like Eloy, or frequently used for beach jumps will not last as long.-------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. riggerrob 643 #5 August 6, 2004 Suspension lines last 200 (competitors) to 800 (lazy fun jumpers). Main canopies can last 2,000 with a bit of care. Reserves often spend their entire lives in containers and fall out of fashion before they wear out. 20 jumps is about the limit on any reserve, but then I would seriously question the previous owner's main packing abilities. Harness/containers wear out the fastest. Type 8 webbing wears out the soonest, especially in the desert. I have seen some containers that were faded, frayed and filthy after 18 months/1,000 jumps in the desert. On the other hand, I recently refused to repack a 25 year old Bullet container - that was still airworthy - because it fell out of fashion. I want nothing to do with round reserves from the acid mesh era. Furthermore, my DZO has banned round reserves .
