Talon Reserve Pack Volume Question

Recommended Posts

I am wondering if anybody can tell me if a 375 cu. in. reserve will fit in a 1988 Talon "C" reserve container?

(I tried calling Sandy at RI but they are off on summer vacation)

TIA

I looked on the web page and looked at the packing instructions for the Talon II, hoping that they used the same reserve/main codes as for the Talon but they appear to have changed.

I am pretty sure that it will work as the reserve going in is just slightly (7%) larger - according to PIA's pack volume charts - than a reserve that we were told would fit in the container.

Also, the Maverick at 410 going into a D makes me think a 365 should fit into a C

Thanks guys :)

Yes, Rigging Innovations changed their Talon sizing charts dramatically when they introduced the '94 Talon.
Before that, Talon reserve containers were labelled "B" (150 square foot reserve canopy) through "F" (340 square foot).
When they introduced the '94 Talon, they completely changed the nomenclature to T00 (sub 100) through T9 (huge student reserves).
The '94 evolved into the Talon 2 with only minor changes.
But I still have to stare at R.I. charts to remind me which reserve fits in which size of Talon. Fortunately, R.I. is an official PIA canopy volume measuring station and only recommends combinations they have packed in house.
I should know, I test-packed the very first PD-113 reserve - on the West Coast - into '94 Talon T0 and T00 prototypes.
Not all of those pack jobs were pretty.

Who knows what you can make "fit". But I have recently packed a few Talon one D-8s with Swift Plus 175s and a Raven one. They were full as far as I was concerned. I would just say no if someone asked me to put a Raven 2 into one.

Will The raven II reserve fit in a size D, container Talon1?

I would have to look in an old Talon manual or an old logbook.
Have you looked in the old Talon/Telesis 1 manual?

FWIW, I have that manual. It lists the D container as 400 ci ideal and 425 ci being firm. The canopy volume chart I have lists several measurements for a Raven 2. From 429 to 483 ci.

IOW there will be some sweating and cursing for any rigger who tries to stuff a Raven II (about 215 square feet) into a D-sized Talon.
Forget about packing a Raven with Dacron suspension lines, but you might get a Spectra-lined Raven in there.
