riggerrob 643 #2 July 17, 2004 Larger F-111 canopies work fine as mains. Heck! I have more than 2,000 on F-111 mains. The main reason Ravens could be used as mains or reserves is that they were originally designed as canopy formation mains and the reserve production line was an after thought. All Ravens sewn before 1997 (pre Dash M series) still had bridle attachments. However, there are a few caveats. There is no point to exceeding wing loadings of 1 pound per square foot and this will result in far more pack volume than modern mains. Secondly, forget about turf surfing, because older canopies do not have half as much flare power, especially when you compare an older 7-cell with a modern 9-cell. Finally, plan on retiring the canopy after 700 jumps as it will become so porous that it will take forever to open and will flare like a bag lock! Hee! Hee!
