JonIceland 0 #1 July 15, 2004 Hi Im kinda new to this sport and love it. My name is Gudjon and am from Iceland but usually called Jon. I just started this summer by finishing the AFF and A license in Skydive City Z-Hills. I searching for a rig and I need some help from the more experienced finding the right rig for me. I was thinking about the Infinity container and maybe 170 Sabre2 or Safire 170. I´ve got about 35 jumps total and 7 of them on a 190 Sabre, but I´m not sure if I like the openings on the Sabre. I´m 190 lbs. Thanks in advance.
mr2mk1g 10 #2 July 15, 2004 Do you have local instructors to talk to? They are going to be the best source of info for you, especially on canopy choice. Look into wing loading for a start - it's not the whole answer, but is an inportant factor (exit weight in lb/square foot). Most people would agree the Sabre2 is a good canopy for you, dependant on size. It's worth remembering that the Safire 1 is actually 7% smaller than it's size would otherwise indicate. The Safire 2 is the size on the lable though (go figure). Personally I wouldn't reccomend a 170 for your first canopy. If you're 190lb then you have an exit weight arround 215lb. That gives a wing loading of 1.26:1 That's a scary wing loading to be on and increases the risks on injuring yourself dramatically. You should reconsider that size. A good rule of thumb to follow is to not exceed a wing loading of 1.1:1 (1.1lb per square foot of canopy). Infinity's are nice. So are many others. You can't really go wrong with anything that's made currently (ie new or only a few years old). If you're looking at older gear there are some containers to avoid or at least to avoid doing certain things in. Again talk to your instructors or local jumpers. Perhaps post here about specific models if you wish. Oh, and welcome to our world.
JonIceland 0 #3 July 15, 2004 Thank you. I am pretty scared of the 170 Sabre, my local instructors are trying to sell me a used 170 Sabre with about 200-300 jumps, a Javelin container and 2 year old Cypress. I like the Javelin container, I feel comfortable in the Javelin and I like how responsive the Sabre is but I´ve had one severe hard open with bad line twists on that rig and I can´t stop thinking about that it probably won´t be the first and only time I will be experiencing hard openings while using the Sabre. At first I starting looking for 190 sq ft canopy but they convinced me of buying a 170 sq ft. Don´t know if I should believe the since the local instructor only has about 1000-2000 jumps and doesn´t seem quite supportive of new skydivers. RyanofOZ 0 #4 July 15, 2004 You need to talk to your local gear dealers also. They are a great source of info and usually much more up-to-date on what is out there for your ability. One thing is fore sure, dont but something you are not sure about or that you feel pushed into buying. There is a ton of good gear out there at the right price is you look a little. Just because your instructors are pushing you to get the 170 Sabre doesnt mean you have to. Even instructors make bad calls and it seems they may be doing that here. Talk to GravityGirl and Skybytch here, they are great sources for gear and information. Remember that your safety needs to come first. You can still scare yourself on a 230sq ft canopy if you fly it right so dont be in a rush to go load the wing. I load a Spectre210 at about 1.19:1 and it is more than enough for me.Oz
mr2mk1g 10 #5 July 15, 2004 Well, I’m not going to start arguing with your local instructors. A) I’m not an instructor, B) they’ve seen you fly and know you. I do advise caution exceeding the recommended wing loadings though, and worry when instructors give advice contrary to what the manufacturers specifically warn about. They key idea here is that if you’re scared of it, odds are you’re not ready for it. Don’t be too afraid of a Sabre. Not all open hard and it should be possible to tame those that are prone to hard openings either through packing technique or with a minor modification.
