murrays 0 #1 July 13, 2004 On a wingsuit jump I did last Saturday my flocking partner and I got the following freefall times: My Neptune - 55 secs My Protrack - 61 secs His Neptune - 71 secs His video - timed at 61 secs. Our deployments were within a second or two of each other. He was getting linestretch when I tossed. Both Neptunes were worn handmounted and the Protrack was inside a front pocket on my wingsuit. Anybody have any ideas why we got such different readings?-- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
ianmdrennan 2 #2 July 13, 2004 Handmounted can cause burbling with wrist movements. I'd assume that had a lot to do with it just like in a FF helmet head movements can cause squirrly readings. I know the speed divers place the units on their hips (Staso will jump in here if I'm wrong) for the most consistent readings. Blues, Ian ps: How's the sabre2 treating ya! pilotdave 0 #3 July 13, 2004 How close were deployment altitudes? I find my neptune shows deployments low. It might show the very bottom of the opening. For a deployment at 3000, it will typrically show around 1800. My flatline alarm is set to 1800 and it sometimes goes off slightly after the canopy has finished inflating, so I assume the freefall time is counting all the way through the snivel and beyond. I've had some RW jumps show 78 seconds of freefall which just doesnt sound possible. Tracking dives have gone over 80 seconds. No video to compare. I wonder if it has trouble because it's designed to be compatible with wingsuit jumps... Might be set to stop counting at a much lower speed than the protrack. murrays 0 #6 July 13, 2004 I will ask my buddy if he has downloaded his Neptune to Paralog and will download my Protrack info to Jump track and see if that sheds any light. Thanks for the suggestion Ray.-- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
murrays 0 #7 July 14, 2004 Here's my Neptune/Protrack comparisons... Jump 2221 (Solo Wingsuit) - Protrack Average speed - 63 mph Freefall - 60 secs Exit alt - 9100 Depl. Alt. - 3300 - Neptune: Average speed - 69 mph Freefall - 59 Secs Exit alt - 9200 Depl Alt - 3100 Pretty close but it says my fall rate at 6k was 91 mph. The Protrack graph says my fall rate at 6k was - 62.2 mph (TAS) Everything else is pretty close but the speed at 6k seems out to lunch on the Neptune. Jump 2222 - 2 way Flock - Protrack Average Speed - 91 mph Freefall - 51 sec Exit Alt. - 9500 Depl Alt - 3200 6k Speed - 91 mph - Neptune Average Speed - 89 mph Freefall - 49 secs Exit Alt. - 9600 Depl Alt - 3100 6k Speed - 109 mph Jump 2223 - 2 way Wingsuit - Protrack Average Speed - 96 Freefall - 61 Exit Alt. - 11200 Depl Alt - 3300 6k Speed - 99 mph - Neptune Average Speed - 96 mph Freefall - 55 secs Exit Alt. - 11300 Depl Alt - 3500 6k Speed - 93 Average Speed - Protrack is lower, higher, the same Freefall - Protrack is higher on all three Exit Alt - Protrack is lower on all three Depl Alt - Protrack is higher, higher, lower 6 K speed - Protrack is lower, lower, higher. Interesting...but I don't see a real pattern with anything except freefall time and exit altitude.-- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

I know the speed divers place the units on their hips (Staso will jump in here if I'm wrong) for the most consistent readings. a bit higher then hips - on lateral webbing. differences in static/dynamic pressure will affect the speed reading and it could be significant. but i'm very surprised to see the difference in times. the unites might be calibrated slightly different, but i'd expect difference in a second or two, not 20 ! the "official" red pro-tracks used for competition are vacuum-calibrated (whatever that means) and the difference in time from left- to right-mounted pro-track not more then a second if i remember correctly. it would be interesting to have both of those neptunes on one jumper and see what the diff will be. stan. -- it's not about defying gravity; it's how hard you can abuse it. speed skydiving it is ... I fly with two neptunes and one protrac and those are very representative of the figures I get even with latest software. Sometimes the neptunes cut the free fall time very short for wingsuits but still log the speeds well into the flight. Hopefully neptune will get some fine tune on their software in the near future.
