Rolling a flat pack

Recommended Posts

I flat packed a Strong KT7 and rapped the tail around the top then tightly rolled the canopy as per psycho pack (easier to get in the D-bag for the big truck and 71yr. old farts).Jumped it at terminal yesterday and had a nice on heading opening.it was a lot easier and faster to pack that way.Have previousely been using the psycho pack with good results.
Has anyone else used this method on more than 1 time??

You might want to have a bridle extension at the attachment point. This will lower the wear and tear on the canopy by not having to pull the topskin over to the side of the roll.

Also check the attachment point periodically to be sure you are not doing any damage. When the Batwing first came out there was a problem with bridle attahments tearing/separating from the ribs. Precision reinforced the attachment point on subsquent canopy builds...

And that works just fine? My wife has had a newish Sabre 150 for a couple months, and it's still too slippery for her to stick in the bag. Having to wait for packers to be available is really dragging down her jumps/trip to the DZ and it's expensive. This sounds like it could really easy up the process...there's no problem with just lifting it up against you and rolling down?

None at all. The bridle attachment can remain clear as well.

Just roll it down, then set it on the tail and stuff it in the bag.

Just remember this, the last opportunity to make sure the slider is up all the way is before you close up the bag, so double check it.

please forgive my ignorance on this matter, i am still very very new, are you saying you do your fold and what not and then inteead of folding it to put it in the bag, you roll it??

i imigine that would slow down the opening a bit wouldnt it? Sure would make those rental gear jumps much better....

After the canopy is skinnied up.. kneel on the tail and pull it up to the chest and yes.. just roll it up (down actually) like a sleeping bag.

It will not slow the opening down. As the pilot chute extracts the Parachute from the bag, it straightens it right out no matter how you fold it, or roll it.

If kneel on it down by where the slider is, then pull the canopy up to your chest and roll it down, what do you do about the bridal and the d-bag? Since the attachment point is where you would begin your roll from, how do you keep them out of the roll???

You can kinda slip the bridle attachment out of the roll as you roll it up. Try it, it should make sense after that.

Exactly. Once rolled down to the point that you get to the bridle attachment point, I simply pull it out a bit so it is clearly exposed. Never a problem at all and no, I don't use any type of extension to pull it out to the side.

For clarification: I kneel on the slider end, pull the canopy up to my chest and make sure it stays coccooned, roll it down to the ground, bag it, then flip myself around and stuff in the "counterfold" that I was kneeling on. Lovely and very, very fast.

Damn, I wish I was sitting on the floor with my rig instead of sitting behind a desk right now because this is driving me nuts trying to visualize.:S When you "slip" the bridle attachment out, do you mean slip it out to the side and pulling the top skin with it? If so, I thought that is why a bridle extension was important to a psycho pack.

I'm having the same difficutly visualizing this too. When I pack, my bridal attachment point is at the top of my cocoon. If I started rolling it from the top down to where I'm kneeling where my slider is, I would simply roll my bridal and my d-bag right into my roll.

(and I do have my rig right in front of me and still can't figure this out, unless I'm supposed to pull the bridal over to one side while I'm rolling?)

Not out the side. Just roll it down, and pull the bridle attachment point straight out the top as usual. It doesn't get rolled into the pack job very much so just pull it out a bit before you stuff it in the bag.

I didnt really give his comment much weight. I asked about the Psyco pack and he gave me about the same answer. He seemed like since it was not what he does that it was not something I needed to be doing. I guess I will see tomorrow when it open above my head. I already packed it that way tonight. B|
