"Flingers" reserve system?

Recommended Posts

OK...I sent my container back to Strong a couple months ago for some up-dates. Hard housing, riser tuck tabs, reserve inspection and re-pack...etc. They also added "flingers". I didn't know what they were nor did anyone at my DZ. Well, I had a cutaway July 1st and got to see what they were talking about. It's basically bendable metal strips about 1 inch wide and 5 inches long. They are sewn onto the side flaps of the reserve. They basically keep the side flaps completely open and have to be bent back shut when it's time to close up the reserve. I was just wondering if any other places do this and how new it is. I have a Quasar II container. Other containers like mine do not have these "flingers". I think I might be Strong's test dummy. But it's cool cuz the reserve totally worked awesome. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

You might try contacting Ted or his shop and see what they have to say.

Sound very similar in function to pack openning bands which were used back in the old days when jump were a nickel!
They were bungee like things that were stretched when the container was closed. On opening the bands retracted to open the container.

Damn where's my pointers manual when I need it!:)

I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.

Sounds like strips of 'spring' metal and as you mentioned, like pack opening bands. I've seen them (spring metal) on old backs. Have never seen them on seats or chests. Is gear getting like the mini-skirt? Some of the old 'stuff', coming back?:D

They're not like pack opening bands. They are solid spring steel, not coil springs, and pop to their original shape when the pack is open. This original shape opens the side (hmmm) I think side flaps. They're sewn into the side flaps and completely covered. They seemed to me to be solving a problem that didn't exist but didn't see a down side. Saw them at the 2003 PIA symposium, but haven't packed a rig with them.
