ohad_ch 0 #1 December 19, 2014 Hey guys, My name is Ohad, 19 from Israel. I jumped (tandem, of course) a week ago for the first time, and since then I haven't stopped thinking about the jump, which was AWESOME. Now I save money for my AFF course I joined the forum so I can learn more about skydiving, and know people who have the experience. So, my first question that interested me since the jump: Can one catch thermals using the parachute? I haven't found yet any video in youtube which shows that, and that is really interesting. (Maybe that's the right place to mention that I love flying, and I plan to learn to fly a glider too).

Yes, you can catch thermals, but they usually aren't strong enough to make you gain altitude. Rather, they just make you hold altitude and not descend. In other words, the uplift offsets the descent of the canopy. It really wouldn't make much of a video, because they're usually invisible and you can't see them, unless they have some dust or debris in them. A video of a parachutist in a thermal would look just like any other canopy video, except that the altimeter would not change readings much.
