lyncks 0 #1 July 26, 2014 Hey everyone Like the subject says, I did a tandem jump last week and all this week I've been reading about skydiving like a maniac. I was terrified when I did the tandem jump (before I got into the plane mostly), but then my face on the ground was priceless. I was high for a week lol. The thing is I don't know what to do so I can be more comfortable with the jumps (the first AFF jump terrifies me). My plan is to go to Sofia, get some wind tunnel time, then do 1-2 IAD jumps then the AFF course. What do you think about this? Or should I just man up and go to AFF directly? My concerns are about how much do you actually learn at ground level? How do I steer the canopy, find the DZ, not screw up when coming down with the canopy over my head? Is the ground training that good? The DZ is really good, no incidents so far, very professional and good equipment (from what I've noticed). I've seen countless AFF training videos, but not many from ground training or someone who explains how good that training is and if I should feel safe. Any tips? Cheers
Trafficdiver 8 #2 July 26, 2014 Yep. I had the same feelings after my tandem. I suggest you go right to AFF. Yeah, it will be scary, but overcoming that fear is the best part of skydiving and it's what binds us all together. Heck you already overcame it once with your tandem. Now do it again. All of your other questions will be answered during your FJC (first jump course) . All of them. Go for it!
FlyingRhenquest 1 #3 July 26, 2014 The way to get comfortable with it is do more skydives! From what I've seen tunnel time can help with some of the AFF levels, but that first jump is still a pretty overwhelming experience at least for some people. Everyone's too different to really predict how it's going to go for you. You can't practice canopy flight, but a basic conservative pattern is not too difficult, and I've seen dozens of AFF students accomplish it. You just have to be aware that if the radio's out or you can't understand it, it's still ultimately falls to you to get to the ground safely. So pay attention when they're talking about the pattern and wind indicators! Though I recall that I mostly just cheated and followed the parachute in front of me heh heh heh.I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here? lyncks 0 #4 July 26, 2014 Thanks both of you for the replies :) Really helpful. Will just try to get that tunnel time before (which is scheduled way earlier than I would go and signup for the AFF) and see how I do there. After that then directly to AFF. Seeing these forums and reading so much from them, I guess my main concern is the damn landing :) (disregarding the really bad things which are uncommon). Thanks a lot! dthames 0 #5 July 27, 2014 I did some AFF jumps and some SL jumps, mixed. I finished my initial training with SL progression, mainly because I had some difficulty. Both AFF and SL/IAD have their own merits. My suggestion, Do what you think best for you after talking to the instructors at the DZ(s) where you plan to train.Instructor quote, “What's weird is that you're older than my dad!”
