Lito 0 #1 June 24, 2004 Any ideas on how/why I got end cell closure on ALL the cells during opening? ...see attached, digital stills grab from video (24sec from dump to "normal complete" canopy.....lots of material out, still well above the chop deck) . 1) Canpoy out, cells closed & folded over the front, open lengthwise but still compressed depthwise. (note slider down) 2) Ditto..stable flight, except a little whofty & steep 3) Bit of rear riser action (held deep, Not pumped) 4) Cell infaltion..Yay! 5) Inflated cells...canopy still in slight dove to the right 6 & 7) Release rear risers......."Centre Cell" closure....I have never seen this before Couple of pumps on the rear risers & the canopy is fine (not shown too boaring). BTW canopy is Icarus Beta 145 (JYRO)...inspected after landing no damage to skins or ribs.....Very bumpy thermals on that day.
skymiles 3 #2 June 25, 2004 I used to have the exact same problem and I bet you got spanked. The problem is that canopy is fully open before cells are pressurized, instead of the cells pressurizing as the canopy is opening. This out of sequence opening is caused by the bottom skin of the canopy is getting air before the slider. Essentially, the slider is bypassed in the opening sequence. To fix the problem 1) make sure the slider is all the way up the lines, 2) when the canopy is over your shoulder after flaking make sure the lateral edges of the slider are above the lower edge of the stabilizers, and 3) make sure the leading edge of the slider is pulled about halfway forward of the nose (maybe more depending on the type of canopy). Lito 0 #3 June 25, 2004 Actually this was one of the softer openings. However, I have had some crackerjacks in the past & the canopy was returned to the manufacturer when it was new for "taming". I recall 4 instructers packing & jumping the canopy (all got wacked) before it was returned. I have found this canopy likes the nothing done to the nose (left in the centre), but the slider needs to be quartered & pulled foreward with the tail wrapped tightly (13-14 turns). Still expect 1 in ever 30 to 40 jumps to be hard. I have jumped the Cobalt & hardest opening I had was only firm. Even a terminal resevre ranks 4th or 5th back when I was experimenting with pack jobs to slow the openings down.
skydiverton 0 #4 June 25, 2004 How many jumps on the lines and pilot? My stilleto 107 also did this sometimes. After a reline and a new pilot it never happened again. At the moment of reline the canopy was at least 800 jumps old and did not flare the way it should be. The F-111 pilot also had 800 jumps. I got this canopy for free so I tried a reline and it worken out perfect. Opens and lands as new, but does not pack as new. I don't know whether the reline or the new zepo pilot solved it, but i'm happy with it as it is now. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Using your droque to gain stability is a bad habit, Especially when you are jumping a sport rig
